California has lost an icon. Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers, spent a lifetime as a relentless advocate for justice, and was a friend. Even at 96, she was a familiar face at the Capitol and a voice we could always count on. I’m so grateful our paths crossed. This loss hits hard, and I’m still searching for the words. Thank you, Dolores. Sí se puede.

No more neglect, we’re restoring East Oakland’s shoreline! This stretch of coast has been overlooked for too long, that’s why I’m proud to support the Oakport project to protect our land while creating a hub for our nonprofits to thrive. I’m thankful for our community partners who are making this happen and I know we can accomplish great things when we collaborate!

There’s nothing like celebrating in Alameda with the people and culture that make our island so special. Filipino Americans have shaped California’s story for generations, and that history lives on in our communities every day. AB 40, the Community First Coal Review Act, was signed into law! I was overjoyed to connect with some of our dedicated advocates this morning in Oakland to celebrate this victory for the East Bay and remind us why this fight is so important.

This Latino Heritage Month I’m honored to share that I will be serving as Treasurer of the this upcoming session.

Latino issues are California issues. I’m honored to bring a focus to this role, using our caucus’s resources to build power in Sacramento for the needs of our community. Medi-Cal and CalFresh recipients are predominantly Latino, and Latinos drive our economy while facing overwhelming challenges from rising economic inequality.

I look forward to working with my colleagues to tackle these issues head-on, support young Latino leaders, and deliver for California.

Donald Trump should not determine fair mortgage lending laws in California, and with a stroke of his pen, Governor Newsom can deliver an alternative: AB 801. This bill is a necessary antidote to increased federal inaction on redlining and other discriminatory lending practices, which have historically blocked Black and brown Californians from generational wealth-building.

Across California, the growing number of abandoned recreational vehicles is creating significant public health, safety, and environmental hazards in our communities. Local governments haven’t had the resources or authority they need to properly address this. AB 1153, the Funding Clean Streets Act, gives them the tools to tackle this growing issue to protect our communities, improve public safety, and ensure clean, accessible streets for everyone.

The integration of artificial intelligence into health care is rapid and underregulated. AB 1979 puts workers and patients before profits and greed. I am calling on Governor Newsom to sign this bipartisan bill.

Dolly Parton was a working-class icon who brought light, learning, and literacy to so many children. I was proud to stand with a bipartisan coalition of my colleagues in voting to recognize September 25 (nine two five) as Dolly Parton Day. 🩷
