I am saddened to hear about the passing of civil rights leader Dolores Huerta. She was an honest and unyielding advocate for justice and a better world for all of us. Let her memory be a blessing.

My office’s Victim Services Unit partnered with Supervisor Sylvia Arenas and San José Councilmember Pamela Campos to host the Walk Against Domestic Violence and Remembrance Event at Martial Cottle Park—a somber but powerful walk to remember those we have lost, stand with grieving families and survivors, and demand an end to domestic violence. In one of the wealthiest and most innovative regions in the world, it is a moral outrage that we have not found a way to keep more vulnerable children safe. Too many children known to our child-welfare system have died. Each had a name, a family and a future.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney is calling for a new approach to keeping kids safe.

At least six children involved with Santa Clara County’s DFCS have died in the past four years. Each death is a profound loss. My Office will share ideas with county leaders in the hope of contributing to our collective work to prevent further tragedies.

My hope is that our next press conference will be about the substantive and collaborative steps we are taking to save children’s lives, rather than our response to the heartbreaking loss of another child.

There is perhaps no greater threat to human justice than allowing machine intelligence to decide it. There is simply no upside to AI choosing which crimes to investigate, which charges to bring, how to prosecute cases, whether someone is guilty or innocent, or what sentence to impose.

These are profoundly human decisions that require the power of human intelligence, the discernment of the human heart, and the wisdom of the human spirit. Once we surrender those fundamental responsibilities, we can never go back.

Diane Peterson stayed behind to clean her classroom at Branham High School. Her life was taken that day in 1978, leaving her family and community with unanswered questions for nearly five decades.

This mini-documentary from the YouTube channel Cold Cases Solved recounts the search for her killer—and the family member’s tip that helped our Office’s Cold Case Unit and the San Jose Police Department solve her murder in 2025.

I wish Diane were alive today. Although her killer is deceased and cannot face justice, I hope these answers bring her loved ones a measure of peace.

I’m proud of our Office’s Cold Case Unit and our partners at SJPD for their persistence. Time does not diminish our responsibility to seek the truth. Every victim matters. Every family deserves answers. (Complete documentary in comments)

Earlier this week, I gave a presentation to criminal justice professionals at the Law Enforcement Leaders (LEL) Conference at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law I spoke about our office’s successful efforts to implement Gun Violence Restraining Orders , also known as . We have been a national leader in using GVROs to prevent gun violence.

Red flag laws are a powerful tool for saving lives. They provide a legal process to temporarily remove fi****ms from people who pose a serious risk of harming themselves or others, while protecting due process and Second Amendment rights.

A great chance to discuss meaningful criminal justice reforms, which is a favorite topic!

As Silicon Valley’s district attorney, I believe I have a responsibility to provide moral leadership on artificial intelligence (AI) and its use in the justice system.

I had the opportunity to discuss this consequential issue at this year’s Silicon Valley Peace Conference, organized by Pacifica Institute BayccOfficial & GLOBAL MINISTRIES UNIVERSITY. Thank you to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Palo Alto for hosting the event.

My full speech is in the comments.
