Earlier this week we celebrated Jonathan Fong, along with the rest of his fellowship cohort, on the Assembly Floor! Over the past year he's become an integral part of our team, staffing legislation, engaging in stakeholder meetings, and taking constituent calls.

I'm proud of the work ethic he's brought and the skills he's developed. Jonathan already helped get AB 1919 across the governor's desk and signed into law — a direct win for the constituents of AD28.

For this to be an early chapter of his career in policy says a lot about where he's headed and how fast he'll get there.

I'm grateful to my colleagues for their support as I presented HR 126, proclaiming September as Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

This marks my fourth year rising to share my story of su***de loss on the Assembly Floor, and while it never gets easier to speak about, the openness it inspires in others to speak of their own losses and struggles underscores the life-saving impact of speaking openly about su***de.

Su***de is preventable, and we all have a role to play in preventing it. Talk openly about mental health, learn the warning signs of su***de, promote 988. When someone is struggling, ask the hard questions, then listen.

I’m proud to announce that Governor Newsom has signed my bill, AB 1919, into law! This gives Santa Cruz METRO voters the authority to fund transit through a citizens’ initiative, putting funding decisions directly in the hands of the riders who rely on their services every day.

This past weekend, AD28 Field Representative Lisette joined the rest of the Santa Cruz County legislative delegation to pitch in at the 17th annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive. Hundreds of volunteers packed 2,500 backpacks with school supplies for students across the county experiencing homelessness.

Thank you to United Way Santa Cruz and the County Office of Education for organizing, and to everyone who showed up for our kids.

61 years ago today, decades of civil rights advocacy culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This landmark law ended widespread discriminatory practices that had kept Black Americans from exercising their right to vote, though not without a fight to preserve it.

Over the years, key provisions of the Act have been struck down by party-line Supreme Court decisions, opening the door for states to undermine minority voters through racially discriminatory district maps.

We honor this anniversary because it reminds us that access to our democracy is not a privilege. It's a right that demands fierce protection.

Big news: AB 1919 has passed the Senate and is on its way to the Governor’s desk!
 
Once signed, Santa Cruz METRO will finally have the election authority it needs to put local funding decisions directly in the hands of the voters who rely on its services.

Grateful to have championed this alongside my joint author, Assemblymember Addis, and my co-author, Senator Laird.
