MRCC MOGADISHU – SEARCH, RESCUE AND MARITIME EMERGENCY RESPONSE OPERATION
M/V JACUAR Incident | 16–19 September 2026
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mogadishu, under the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, coordinated a joint search, rescue and emergency response operation following a maritime incident involving M/V JACUAR, a general cargo vessel located off the coast of Ceel Macaan, approximately 10 nautical miles northeast of Mogadishu.
The vessel had been in the vicinity of Mogadishu Port for nearly three weeksfollowing a structural failure. As the vessel was carrying a heavy cargo, the situation was further complicated by vessel rolling, which resulted in water entering the vessel.
On 16 September 2026, the situation deteriorated as the vessel was unable to control the ingress of water, resulting in the vessel grounding/becoming stranded near the coastline. A subsequent emergency situation involving the reported sinking of the vessel was then reported.
Operational Coordination
On 17 September 2026, MRCC Mogadishu disseminated an alert and distress message through IORIS and established an Operational Community Area (OPCA) to facilitate:
Emergency communications;
Operational information sharing;
Monitoring of the vessel's situation; and
Coordination among the agencies and rescue units involved in the response.
The operation involved and was coordinated in cooperation with:
Somali Police Force – Coast Guard Division (SPF-DCG);
Somali Navy Coast Guard (SNCG);
Mogadishu Port Authority;
Search and Rescue (SAR) units and other relevant agencies.
🛟 Crew Evacuation and Safety
During the operation, 13 members of the vessel's crew were safely evacuated from the vessel.
Meanwhile, 5 essential crew members, including the Master/Captain, remained on board to monitor the condition of the vessel's machinery, structure and overall safety situation.
In addition, a joint rescue team was deployed to the vessel to support the assessment of the safety situation and ongoing response activities.
📡 Continued Monitoring and Coordination
MRCC Mogadishu continues to monitor and coordinate the operation, working closely with all relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The primary priorities remain:
🛟 Safety of the crew
🚢 Safety of the vessel
📦 Protection of the cargo
🌊 Protection of the marine environment
📡 Effective communication and inter-agency coordination
This operation demonstrates the importance of inter-agency cooperation, effective emergency communication, information sharing and coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities in protecting and saving lives at sea.
