Rumor has it that librarians love cats. So on , we’d love to introduce you to the unofficial Library of Congress cat, Brünnhilde. In 1936, an unusually tolerant tabby cat posed for two black-and-white photographs while dressed in a winged helmet and breastplate armor as the valkyrie Brünnhilde from the opera “Der Ring des Niebelungen.” The photographs were published in Advertising & Selling magazine that same year. A star was born.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t also take this opportunity to say that the NLS catalog contains many books and magazines about cats and for cat lovers. The “Cats: Care and Feeding” booklist is a good place to start: www.loc.gov/nls/new-materials/book-lists/cats-care-and-feeding?loclr=fbnls.

Published 100 years ago, Ernest Hemingway’s "The Sun Also Rises (BR16853, DB13421, DB34114)” is widely considered the defining book of the so-called Lost Generation, the war-weary young adults who came of age in the 1920s. Hemingway's first full-length novel, told from the point of view of journalist Jake Barnes, follows a group of hard-drinking, disillusioned expatriates navigating life in Paris and Spain. (Audiobook version DB34114 noted above, by the way, is narrated by the great Alexander Scourby, inspiration for the creation of the Alexander Scourby Awards for excellence in narration.) For a deeper dive, check out "Everybody Behaves Badly: The True Story Behind Hemingway's Masterpiece 'The Sun Also Rises' (DB85714)" by Lesley M.M. Blume, which recounts Hemingway's life in Paris from 1921 through the book's publication in 1926, drawing on the writings of his illustrious circle of literary contemporaries.
For more on Hemingway’s life and work, search the NLS Catalog, https://nlscatalog.loc.gov?loclr=fbnls, or access a panel discussion on Hemingway from the 2017 National Book Festival at www.loc.gov/item/2021690896/?loclr=fbnls.

Every October 15, we celebrate White Cane Day and recognize the important role the white cane can play in the lives of people who are blind or have low vision.

A white cane is more than a mobility tool.

It can help a person detect obstacles, identify changes in the walking surface, and navigate their surroundings. It can also represent something bigger: independence, confidence and the freedom to go where you want to go.

This White Cane Day, we're celebrating every journey, every new route, and every destination made possible through skills, tools, and confidence.

Here's to moving freely and living fully.
