Hot and dry conditions persist with intensifying drought indices that continue to support increased wildfire activity. Current fuel moisture and soil moisture are contributing to resistance to control issues on many fires. Please call 911 if you see smoke.

-Secure your trailer chains and inspect your load to ensure nothing is dragging.

‼️Emerald Ash Borer Alert‼️

Wednesday our Forest Health Specialist found some suspicious green beetles in the EAB Traps in Atoka County at the McGee Creek Wildlife Management Area.

These beetles were collected and will be sent into an entomology lab for official confirmation. However, our Forest Health Specialist, who is our in-house expert, is confident these are EAB.

As a reminder: Emerald Ash Borers are invasive species that do not belong in our ecosystem and can cause significant damage. They’ve been previously seen in McCurtain, Choctaw, Pushmataha, Love, Carter, Murray and Delaware counties. Emerald Ash Borers can fly up to 10 miles per year and traditionally travel on firewood.

Do your part to protect Oklahoma’s ash trees & burn firewood where you buy it and don’t move it.

It's hot! We Oklahoman's are no strangers to heat and dry spells, but did you know the effects of a severe drought on your trees can last for years? It's not just about immediate wilting.

Long-Term Effects of Drought on Trees:
A major drought can weaken a tree's entire system, making it vulnerable for 2–7 years afterward (the "Drought Legacy Effect").

🛑 Hydraulic Failure: Air bubbles (embolisms) block water transport in the sapwood, permanently damaging the tree's plumbing.

🛑 Feeder Root Dieback: Essential roots that absorb water and nutrients die off quickly in dry soil.

🛑 Vulnerability to Pests & Disease: Stressed trees have depleted energy reserves and cannot defend themselves against boring insects like bark beetles or fungal diseases.

How You Can Help Your Trees Remain Resilient:
Action taken during and before a drought makes all the difference for long-term health.

✅ Proper Mulching: Maintain a 3-4 inch layer of undyed, organic mulch around the root zone (but not touching the trunk). This retains soil moisture and insulates roots.

✅ Supplemental, Deep Watering: During dry periods, water slowly and deeply around the drip line of your trees to reach critical root zones, rather than frequent shallow watering.

✅ Species Selection: Consider planting drought-tolerant species native to Oklahoma, like Caddo Maple, Oklahoma Redbud, and various resilient Oaks. They are adapted to our unique climate challenges.

Elevated fire weather will develop again today with the highest fire danger indices in western and southwestern Oklahoma. Beneficial rainfall across areas of northern Oklahoma will moderate fire danger some in those areas although the strength of drying in the coming days will bring those wildland fuels back online very soon.
