UPDATE: 10:08 p.m.

Crews have discovered a 12” main break near NW Expressway and MacArthur Ave. Work to repair the main is underway.

Estimated time to repair is 6-8 hours.

Because crews were able to isolate the break, pressures should return to normal flow for some residents.

Utilities personnel are aware of issues related to low water pressure or no pressure in areas in far west Oklahoma City close to County Line Road between Wilshire Ave. and Britton Rd.

Crews have been dispatched to the area to investigate. We will post additional information when it becomes available on Facebook and Next Door.

REMINDER: There's a free landfill day tomorrow, Saturday, September 12.

WHEN: 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

WHERE:
* East Oak Landfill – 3201 Mosley Rd. (NE 36th Street, east of Sooner Road, south side of street)
* Oklahoma City Landfill – 7001 S. Bryant Ave.
* Oklahoma City Waste Disposal, Inc. – 7600 SW 15th St.
* Northeast Landfill – 2601 N. Midwest Blvd. Spencer, OK (only construction and demolition materials at this landfill)

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
OKC residential trash customers - this includes all customers who pay a monthly trash service bill with the City of Oklahoma City.

WHAT TO KNOW:
* Customers must present a photo ID along with an original, current Oklahoma City Utilities bill (no photocopies accepted), or they may pull up a copy of their bill using the My OKC Utilities app on their smartphone or other mobile device.

* Each residential household may drop off one load of household waste using a passenger vehicle or truck up to a one-ton and one trailer up to 16-feet long. Commercial waste haulers are not allowed.

* All regular bulky waste rules apply to Free Landfill Day. Landfills will not accept tires, toxins, electronic waste, appliances containing Freon or other refrigerants, and household hazardous waste, such as car batteries, oil, propane tanks and pool chemicals.

* Business and commercial waste is prohibited.

* If you rent a home and your utility bill is paid by your landlord, you need to bring proof of rental and proof of payment to the OKC Utilities account affiliated with your address to participate.

* OKC residents who live in apartments are not eligible to participate since their trash services are provided by a private waste hauler through their complex.

Canton Lake water release to replenish Lake Hefner, boosting OKC primary water source

The Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust (OCWUT) is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to draw water from Canton Lake in northwest Oklahoma. The water is needed to help increase water levels at Lake Hefner, which serves as a primary water source for the City of Oklahoma City.

The Canton release is scheduled for Sept. 17. This will be the first water release OCWUT has made from Canton Lake this year, with the most recent release occurring in 2024.

The continued hot temperatures and dry weather conditions have caused water levels at Lake Hefner to drop significantly. The anticipated 16,000-acre-foot release is expected to lower Canton Lake by about three and a half feet and raise Hefner’s water level by a little over four feet, according to Corps and Trust engineers. The water will travel down the North Canadian River to Lake Hefner, with the first signs of water expected to arrive within three to five days of the release beginning. The full release is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

OCWUT holds water-storage rights at Canton Lake and coordinates planned releases with the Canton Lake Advisory Committee, consisting of representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Canton Lake Association and appropriate state and local partners, including the Oklahoma Water Resources Board and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. This coordination helps ensure releases are scheduled and managed in a way that supports Oklahoma City’s water supply needs while considering potential effects on Canton Lake, recreation and wildlife.

“We are grateful for the partnership and expertise that go into planning a release of this kind,” said OCWUT General Manager and OKC Utilities Director Chris Browning. “That collaboration helps us make responsible decisions that protect the reliability of Oklahoma City’s water supply while remaining mindful of the communities, recreation and natural resources surrounding Canton Lake.”

That is how many grass fires OKCFD crews responded to across the metro during August alone. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Please follow all burn ban restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that could create a spark. One small spark can quickly become a fast moving fire.

The City of OKC offices are closed Sept. 7 for Labor Day.

Monday trash and recycling have been postponed to Wednesday, Sept. 9. If you have Monday service, set your carts at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
