Want to learn how to maximize your food? Join the 2026 Scrap Food Waste Challenge!

For three weeks, starting September 28, participants will receive short daily emails on topics like strategic shopping, meal planning, food storage, and use-it-up recipes. Small changes can add up to make big impacts; wasting less food saves money and is a climate solution because it prevents unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions from farming, transporting, and decaying food.

Want to become a better composter? Join the UVM Extension's 2026 Vermont Composting Short Course, a six-week hybrid program that teaches participants how to transform food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich compost that improves garden and landscape soils.

The course runs from Sept. 11 to Oct. 23 and includes online learning, weekly live Zoom sessions and in-person workshops at Vermont community composting sites. Participants will gain practical skills to produce compost that doesn’t attract wildlife.

Registration is open through Sept. 10; the fee is $50 for Vermonters. Visit: https://go.uvm.edu/vtcompostingcourse to learn more and register.

Every home has dangerous products. 🔥

These products often come with warning labels like "flammable," "corrosive," "reactive," or other terms to help you know they need to be handled safely and properly.

Thankfully, when it comes time to get rid of these products, everyone in Vermont has access to a household hazardous waste collection program offered through their local solid waste authority.

Find your local collection programs and contact information at 802recycles.com.

📅Note: Do this before the summer ends! Some collection programs are seasonal or only offer one-day events in the fall.

Trends pass; the planet stays! 🌎

Whimsy maxxing is this new trend that is meant to add joy into our daily lives ✨
Which is not a bad concept—but does it need to mean more stuff headed to the landfill? 🚫🗑️

Try these planet-friendly swaps:
• Thrift/secondhand first—unique finds, smaller impact ♻️🛍️
• Upcycle and DIY: paint, patch, and personalize 🧵🎨
• Choose quality over quantity, and individualize pieces you’ll love long-term 💚
• Rehome responsibly: resell, donate, or freecycle when you’re done 📦

Let’s make whimsy thoughtful and keep the wonder without the waste ✨

Mattresses do not belong in the trash or the blue recycling bin.

Instead, resell them or bring them in for recycling at Sleepwell in Burlington or to your local trash transfer station. Most trash transfer stations collect mattresses for recycling in Connecticut. Help us spread the word!
