Thanks to DEC staff that came out to the Converse Bay boat launch on Lake Champlain to help install a stormwater improvement project! This Fish and Wildlife access area is steep and is a known problem area for runoff into the lake.
The stormwater improvement project included the removal of grass along the steep switchback trail to the water, followed by planting native cedars and the installation of biodegradable erosion control matting and mulch.
Over time the cedars will grow and their roots will hold the soil in place and slow down runoff from further up the hill, reducing sediment inputs into the lake.
Thanks to the for funding this project!

The wetland map updates were required by the Vermont Flood Safety Act, Act 121, passed in 2024. This batch of maps is similar to the preceding updates in June 2025 and March 2026. Experts at GeoSpatial Services at Saint Mary’s University created most of the mapping, which was spot-checked in the field.

📷: Areas of map updates include the watersheds outlined in black which include major portions of Bennington, Lamoille, and Orleans counties.

In Vermont, all plastic, glass, and metal beverage containers can go in the recycling. For certain types of beverages that are covered within Vermont's Bottle Bill, the empty containers can also be redeemed for 5¢ per container.

Redeem or recycle: beer, wine coolers, seltzer water, soda, fizzy drinks, malt beverages, spirits, and liquor. Look for "VT" on the redemption stamp.

Recycle only: sport drinks, hard cider, wine, juice, water, and all beverages purchased out of state

Both redeeming and blue bin recycling are great options and keep the containers out of the trash.

If you don't redeem your empties, the 5 ¢ per container goes to the Vermont Clean Water Fund.

Important reminder: Under Vermont’s 2024 Flood Safety Act, unencapsulated polystyrene foam is prohibited from use for floating structures in Vermont’s waters.

The prohibition on unencapsulated foam applies to any individual or company that owns, distributes, or sells foam docks, buoys, or other floating structures in Vermont. Floating structures include but are not limited to docks, mooring buoys, anchor buoys, and navigation markers. This prohibition applies to floating structures on all lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams.

To help property owners, businesses, and municipalities understand what the requirement means in practice, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has released new guidance, available at the link: https://dec.vermont.gov/Unencapsulated-Polystyrene-Prohibition
