Champ, Vermontā€™s Loch Ness Monster, is said to live in the depths of Lake Champlain. He was reported in a newspaper in 1819. Before that, Indigenous stories tell about a giant water serpent. All reported sightings have described him as friendly, so Champā€™s fame lives on. The mascot for Burlingtonā€™s collegiate summer baseball team the Lake Monsters. Champ shaped pasta in Grand Isle. A 30-foot hanging sculpture at Echo, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. A statue at the St. Albans Bay Town Park. Protecting Champ is the law here, and in the 1980s, the Vermont Legislature enacted protections for the creature.
