Meet Advisory Council Member Human Rights Commission, Vermont!

"The mission of the Vermont Human Rights Commission is to promote full civil and human rights in Vermont. The Commission people from unlawful discrimination in housing, state government employment, and public accommodations, and pursues this mission by enforcing laws, providing Know-Your-Rights education, advancing public policy to safeguard civil rights, and conciliating and mediating disputes.

Part of the HRC's role is to enforce anti-discrimination protections for women and girls. S*x, gender identity, and sexual orientation are all legally protected categories in Vermont. In housing, employment, and places of public accommodation, it's unlawful to be discriminated against based on these characteristics. Vermonters are also protected against housing discrimination on the basis of marital status, having minor children, or being a victim of domestic or sexual abuse. Nursing parents are also protected from discrimination in public places. If people experience or witness discrimination on the basis of ANY of those characteristics, they can call our office! We also provide trainings about these protections and what to do if your rights are violated.

On September 25 and 26, we'll be hosting our annual Civil Rights Summit. Civil rights leaders will gather from around the state to talk about advancing and protecting our civil rights - including a discussion of Proposal 4, an Equal Rights Amendment for Vermont's Constitution. Come and hear about how this amendment is essential for gender justice, and stay for workshops on skill building, effective public advocacy, and a fun night with Vermont comedians."

Meet Advisory Council Member Vermont Works for Women!

"Vermont Works for Women promotes economic justice by advancing gender equity and supporting women and youth at every stage of their career journeys. From supporting youth in career exploration programming like Rosie’s Girls (middle school) and LIFT (high school) to providing technical skills training to women+ who are interested in a career in the trades and renewable energy, VWW is helping to break gender stereotypes and create pathways into high-demand jobs in Vermont.

On October 8, VWW is hosting the 27th annual Women Can Do conference at the Vermont State University Campus in Randolph. Over 400 girls and gender-expansive youth will have the opportunity to explore STEM and trades related careers through hands-on activities and engagement with over 70 exhibitors from Vermont companies."

Join the Human Rights Commission for this year's Civil Rights Summit. Last fall we gathered with over 300 community members to hear from our state's leading civil rights advocates and movement leaders. On September 25 and 26, we will gather again to measure what we have achieved as a state and where we need to go to safeguard civil rights in Vermont.

This year's conference theme, We Have the Tools We Need, will add a second track to our list of exciting panel offerings. Panels in this track will help us build skills and make use of the tools we have available to us to advance public conversation, create and sustain movements, and influence our lawmakers.

Come to the Summit to hear from advocates in immigration justice, racial justice, disability rights, LGBTQ+ rights, education equity, and more. Friday evening will feature a social event with food, drinks, networking opportunities, and a slate of Vermont-based comedians! Registration is free and open now!
