42 agents. One badge. A responsibility to serve. Congratulations to Basic Parole Agent Academy Class 3-26P! Today, 42 new parole agents graduate ready to serve communities across California, protecting public safety, building partnerships, and supporting the path toward positive change. As CDCR Undersecretary Jason Johnson reminds us: “By wearing the badge, you are carrying the trust of the people of California.” That trust is earned every day through character, integrity, courage, and service. Class 3-26P, wear the badge with pride and honor the trust it represents.

Last week 139 cadets graduated from the Basic Correctional Officer Academy and this week they’re serving as correctional officers in institutions across California.

“Over the course of your career, you will be forced to make choices – many of which will not earn you recognition. The choices you make when no one is watching will ultimately tell the story of who you are,” said Rafael Acevedo, graduation keynote speaker and Region IV Associate Director. “Doing the right thing isn’t always easy and there are times when it comes at a cost – do it anyway. Integrity is choosing to do what’s right, regardless of the cost.”

CDCR has academic and career pathways across California institutions with more than 5,000 students learning trades from plumbing and auto mechanics to welding and HVAC. Centinela State Prison celebrated 115 student graduations across its nine trade programs this year, and Pelican Bay State Prison has seen positive results with laborer and electrical works programs as their carpentry program is set to make a return.

Remember, those who pursued CTE had on average a 14% lower rate of recidivism than those who didn’t.

Throughout the week, institutions are recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day with outreach focused on prevention. At California State Prison, Sacramento and Sierra Conservation Center on Monday, Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment staff set up booths on a recreational yard, hosting games, prize drawings and demonstrating how to use Narcan to reverse an overdose.

Today, 139 cadets crossed the stage and became correctional officers. Behind every badge are the people who stood beside them, the families who encouraged them, believed in them and made sacrifices along the way. They were part of this journey, too. Associate Director Rafael Acevedo reminded our graduates to have a long, safe career, but most importantly, a career they can be proud of. His message centered on culture, be the change. Be confident. Lead with humility. Serve with dignity. The way we show up for one another and the example we set matters. To the families who stood behind these graduates: thank you. Your love and support helped carry them to this moment. Today, they don’t just leave with a badge. They leave knowing they have a place in the CDCR family. Wear the badge with pride. Serve with dignity. Lead with purpose. Be the change. And build a career you can be proud of.
