For more than three decades, DAPO has led a parole compliance statewide effort each Halloween – one of many operations each year designed to keep communities safe. DAPO staff and local police join forces for Operation Boo to ensure s*x offenders are compliant and children are safe as they trick-or-treat.

Today the nation’s first in-prison film festival concluded its third annual event at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. The event showcased films created by currently and formerly incarcerated people, with guests from the entertainment industry, educators and community advocates. Participants in the film festival have leveraged their media experience gained at the festival to pursue careers in the film industry after release.

The San Quentin Film Festival supports CDCR’s mission in rehabilitation by fostering accountability while providing incarcerated people with the tools they need to successfully and safely reenter their communities. Recent data show that rehabilitative programming is a crucial factor in keeping people from returning to prison. More than 66 percent of incarcerated individuals who engaged in therapeutic, educational, vocational and self-development programming while incarcerated stayed conviction-free post-release.

A celebrity jury, an expansive selection of films and the only film festival held in a prison:

SQFF is gearing up for its 3rd annual festival inside San Quentin with a jury featuring Karen Pittman, Daveed Diggs, Piper Perabo and Boots Riley and several film selections! Held inside San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, the festival will highlight work from currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers, international directors and the new Long Short submissions. Nearly 800 guests are expected, split between industry attendees and San Quentin residents, with screenings followed by panels with filmmakers and film subjects.

From prison to graduate school, MCRP student’s reentry hits milestone with winning design -- Since leaving prison in April 2025, Angel Paredes has found a part-time job, pursued an MBA at Cal Poly Pomona and won his first art contest. His hand-drawn design appeared on 7,000 shirts for incoming students, marking a personal milestone in his progress through California’s Male Community Reentry Program.
