A landscape shaped by history — and cleanup in progress. 🌿

This is the former Santa Susana Field Laboratory — a nearly 3,000-acre site where decades of rocket engine testing & nuclear research took place.

SSFL sits in the Simi Hills area of Ventura County & is home to remarkable biodiversity, including at least 74 plant species, 97 animal species and 10 distinct habitat types.

Remediating spaces like this is intensive and highly nuanced—we’re requiring stringent environmental assessments and the excavation of tons of hazardous material, while protecting a diverse array of local wildlife.

Since 2024, has required the excavation of more than 18,000 cubic yards and removal of more than 1,253 truckloads of impacted soil to help protect this unique ecosystem for future generations.

These photos capture both the natural beauty of the site and the ongoing cleanup efforts helping preserve it. It’s a big job, but we’re here for it.💚

ICYMI… 👀

That’s exactly what’s happening in Whittier through ’s Equitable Community Revitalization Grant program.

With millions in funding from support, the City of Whittier was able to begin extensive environmental investigation, soil v***r & groundwater pilot testing required to clean up a long-vacant industrial property to be safely revitalized for future community use.

Inside a temporary onsite treatment system, a network of valves, gauges, and piping regulate the precise injection of remedial amendments into groundwater beneath the site. These systems allow engineers to carefully control flow rates and distribution, translating complex remediation plans into real-world action.
Projects like this help remove barriers caused by contamination while supporting healthier neighborhoods & stronger local economies. 🤝

⚠️ Some cleaning products contain hydrofluoric acid—a chemical linked to severe burns, permanent injuries, acute toxicity, and even death.

proposed a regulation that would restrict manufacturers from selling cleaning products containing hydrofluoric acid in California.

Over 700 hydrofluoric acid exposure cases have been documented statewide, including incidents involving children.

Safer alternatives are already available, meaning consumers can still access effective cleaning products without this unnecessary risk.

The public comment period is open now through July 20, 2026.

scientists published a 🆕 paper, “A Laboratory Study of Chemicals in Nail Products and Exposure Assessment,” in Science of the Total Environment—continuing efforts to better understand chemical exposures from nail products, especially for salon workers.

This study presents data on nail products purchased in 2019, prior to DTSC’s regulation of nail products containing toluene. The analysis in this paper builds on our previously reported lab study of 156 nail products purchased from online and brick-and-mortar stores.

🔍 Key findings from our new paper:

• Multiple hazardous chemicals were detected in U.S. nail products purchased in 2019—some at very high levels (e.g., toluene, formaldehyde, MMA, NMP, NEP, DBP, acetonitrile)

• Ingredient labels were often inaccurate, with some harmful chemicals not disclosed

• Products marketed as “safe,” including those for children, did not show lower levels of concerning chemicals

• Exposure modeling (USEtox) indicates potential health risks for both nail salon workers and consumers

🧪 Why this matters:

By pairing reported ingredient data with real-world testing and exposure assessment, DTSC’s new paper highlights gaps in labeling and raises concerns about misleading marketing claims. This study underscores the importance of DTSC’s work to assess chemicals in nail products and minimize their potential harm to consumers and nail salon workers.
