California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond invites district and county leaders, school board members, legislators, and education partners to a statewide summit on one of the defining challenges facing California schools: declining enrollment.

As enrollment falls statewide, districts face budget pressures that reach every classroom. This summit will bring together leaders to share how districts are managing the fiscal and programmatic realities of declining enrollment and to preview the Superintendent's proposal to move California from attendance-based (ADA) funding to an enrollment-based model that reflects the students that schools are serving.

Today, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond was among state leaders recognized for their work to advance community schools at the California Community Schools EMPOWER Summit in Ontario.

Superintendent Thurmond was recognized for his advocacy and commitment to advancing Community Schools across California. California has made an unprecedented investment in community schools. The $4.1 billion California Community Schools Partnership Program, the largest community schools investment in the nation, is supporting nearly 2,500 schools statewide. The latest state budget also secured permanent, ongoing funding to expand the community schools program.

Superintendent Thurmond also recognized Governor Gavin Newsom for elevating whole-child supports and community schools as part of California’s broader educational strategy, and State Board of Education President Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond for her long-standing commitment to deeper learning, equity, and creating conditions for students to thrive. 🏫⭐
