Can you picture it? A new project, encouraged by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, is coming to Flushing County Park, and we are excited to share these upcoming plans on today's Friday in the Field!

In support of Genesee County's priority to promote environmental stewardship, Horticulturist Jess is bringing a Monarch Waystation and native prairie space to the park. This new project will take shape in the open green space next to the playground area, transforming what has been a simple grassy space into a thriving ecosystem filled with Michigan native plants. The goal is to create a welcoming habitat for monarch butterflies, other native pollinators, and host species found throughout our area. All of the plant material used to develop this project will be grown in-house by our Horticulture team.

The Horticulture team has been hard at work mapping out the future layout of the garden, which will even feature an arbor and gathering space designed to host interpretive and educational programs alongside our education team.

We cannot wait to watch this space grow and bloom into a beautiful new feature at the park!

On this week’s Fridays in the Field, we’re celebrating an important piece of our history right here in Genesee County. Tomorrow marks Opening Day for Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad as they kick off Honoring American Veterans: Opening Weekend!

This is more than just the average opening day; it’s a monumental moment as we begin celebrating the village’s 50th anniversary season. Over the last few months, staff members have been hard at work pulling artifacts, framing historic pieces, and creating a mini history museum that highlights some of the biggest moments from the village’s history. This special season is helping bring pieces of our lost history back to life and showcasing them for a whole new generation to experience.

Sara, Doreen, Sandy, Kris, Stephanie, Debbie, and so many more have spent countless hours creating these new displays throughout the village. When you visit this summer, be sure to stop by the history museum, check out the newly displayed artifacts in the store, and learn more about the working history behind each building and what life was like in the 1800s.

That means it’s time for days at Buttercup Beach, Bluebell Beach & Splashpad, and Clover Beach! Pack the sunscreen, grab the towels, and get ready for beach season.

On today’s Fridays in the Field, we wanted to highlight one of our favorite mud-slinging spots in our parks system… The Mounds ORV Park!

Tomorrow, May 16th, the season officially kicks off as all vehicle types and every area of the Mounds reopen for the season. With the forecast looking perfect for opening weekend rides, we know it’s going to be a great start to another muddy season.

We can’t wait to see everyone back out on the trails tomorrow!

Congratulations Allyson!
