Genesee County Habitat for Humanity (Genesee Habitat) is one of nearly 1,200 United States affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, which was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, with the vision of eliminating poor housing conditions and homelessness from the world. Since then, Habitat for Humanity has maintained that vision by incorporating both housing and community development

in its mission of building homes, communities and hope. Founded in 1990, Genesee Habitat, yearly builds or rehabs 6-8 affordable homes in Genesee County, provides approximately 150 Genesee County homeowners with critical repair services, and invests in numerous neighborhood projects throughout the City of Flint. Genesee Habitat also offers Homeowner Counseling Services, where Genesee County residents can receive financial coaching and job preparedness assistance, free of charge. Additionally, Genesee Habitat operates the ReStore, which offers greatly discounted new or slightly used household items to the public, diverting 300 tons a year from Genesee County landfills.

Shakela Palmer applied to the homeowner program over a year ago. On Friday May 22nd, 2026 is when we handed over the keys to her and her son’s new home in Flint Township.🏡

When we asked Shakela how she felt about the homeownership program she said “I had a real good feeling inside and more privacy, I learned a lot about the homeownership process.”

When speaking with Ms. Palmer she said “There are people who want to help others succeed and Habitat provides that village.”

Please consider a donation today to help families like Shakela’s find strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter by partnering with Genesee County Habitat for Humanity.💙💚

LaKetta Rayford and her three children were handed their keys to their new home in Flint Township on May 7th, 2026. 💚

This was a huge accomplishment for Ms. Rayford. She has been a part of our homeownership program for the last 18 months. 💙

When speaking with LaKetta about how she felt about the homeownership program she said “It gave me peace of mind and it was a blessing, a little strenuous but still a blessing.”

LaKetta expressed with us how she felt to be a new homeowner, “I can breathe now and I’m at peace.”

Please consider a donation today to help families like LaKetta’s find strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter by partnering with Genesee County Habitat for Humanity.💙🏡💚
