Martin’s Moment's
A week of calm after the storms of last weekend! I hope you and your family escaped the worst of the weather and weren’t affected by the storms.
Here at Room at the Inn, we had a leaking roof window trying its best to disrupt what we do. But, as always, the team found a way to work around the problem and keep things running while we source a roofer to take a look. I’m pretty certain this is one leak that won’t simply disappear the next time the storms roll in!
Sometimes, something happens that makes you sit back in your chair and smile. This week, I was handed an envelope which, when opened, revealed a cheque for a few hundred pounds. The kind donor had even left their details so that we could claim Gift Aid.
There was no note or explanation, just someone who had decided they wanted to support Room at the Inn and the work we do to help some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
It’s a lovely reminder that there are some truly wonderful people out there. Some prefer to give quietly, without any fuss or recognition, but their generosity speaks volumes. A huge thank you to this particularly kind local lady for thinking of us and supporting our work.
We also welcomed a group of volunteers from Nuclear Transport Solutions, based in Birchwood, who gave up a day to help tidy the garden and car park at one of our properties. They really grafted hard and have made a transformational difference to how the whole area looks. It’s now looking much better and ready for winter, as my Dad would say!
Two very different examples, but both demonstrate the same thing: people who care enough to step forward and make a difference.
Whether it’s a quiet financial donation or giving up a day to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in, every act of kindness matters. For a charity like Room at the Inn, that support makes a real difference to what we can achieve.

THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING MUGS! 😂
We all wonder where that odd sock goes in the washing machine… but here at Room at the Inn, we have another little mystery to solve… where do all our mugs disappear to? 🤔☕
We love a cuppa here, and our mugs certainly get plenty of use! So, we're putting out a little appeal to our lovely Warrington community. 💛
If you have any new or good condition microwave friendly mugs at home that you could spare we'd be so grateful for a donation.
It's a small thing, but a warm drink and a friendly cuppa can make someone's day that little bit brighter.

Martin’s Moment – 23rd October 2026
This week has been an important one for the governance and future direction of Room at the Inn, with our quarterly Board meeting taking place. My thanks go to the Park Royal Hotel for kindly hosting us.
I presented a number of papers covering staff pay rises and affordability, a five-year strategy exploring potential new opportunities for the charity, and our usual review of finances, including forward cash flow forecasting. These are essential elements of ensuring that Room at the Inn remains financially sustainable, operates as a going concern and meets its legal and regulatory obligations across areas such as Health and Safety, HR and employment law, safeguarding and wider compliance.
Our trustees give their time freely and play a vital role in this work. They scrutinise, challenge, guide, advise and encourage, helping to ensure that the charity is well governed and equipped to meet the challenges ahead. Ultimately, this oversight gives our operational team the strongest possible foundation from which to deliver a professional, safe and compassionate service to the people we support.
On the strategic front, our Chair, Alison, and I also met with Sarah Smith, CEO of Warrington Borough Council. This was an important introductory meeting and an opportunity to showcase the work we do, discuss our shared priorities and consider how Room at the Inn can contribute to future local and national strategies for tackling homelessness. With the new Mayor of the Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority expected to take office in May 2027, it is important that we continue to build relationships and ensure that the needs of people experiencing homelessness remain firmly on the agenda.
Of course, while governance, strategy and planning are essential to the charity’s future, our frontline work continues every day. Our team remains focused on supporting the many people who rely on our services, helping them move towards greater stability and, ultimately, a place they can call home.
Unfortunately, this week also brought one of the less welcome challenges of our work. During the night, an individual broke a window at one of our premises. Police attended and an arrest was made. My thanks go to the team for handling the incident professionally and to the local police officers for their prompt response.
Thankfully, the situation was dealt with, but the practical consequence is a £200 bill to replace the damaged window! It may not be a huge amount in isolation, but for a charity working hard to make every pound count, these unexpected costs are another reminder of the financial pressures we face.
That’s another week at Room at the Inn: planning for the future, strengthening partnerships and continuing to support those who need us most.

A FAREWELL AND A HUGE THANK YOU TO FIONA WHITFIELD
This month we said a fond farewell to Fiona Whitfield who has stepped down from her role on the Board of Trustees at Room at the Inn Homeless Charity, Warrington.
Our Chair Alison Duckworth took the opportunity to thank Fiona personally for her support and contribution to the charity presenting her with a bouquet of flowers as a small token of our appreciation.
Being a trustee is an important commitment helping to guide and support the charity as we continue our work with those experiencing homelessness or facing difficult circumstances in Warrington.
Fiona, we are grateful for the time and support you have given to Room at the Inn. On behalf of everyone involved with the charity thank you for being part of our journey and helping us make a difference in our community.
We wish you all the very best for the future! ❤️

DID YOU KNOW? EVERY DONATION HAS A JOURNEY!
Ever wondered what happens to the generous donations given to Room at the Inn Homeless Charity? Here's how our amazing volunteers help turn donations into meals and support for those who use our service!
STEP 1: COLLECTING DONATIONS
Our fantastic volunteers help collect donations and bring them to where they're needed.
STEP 2: SORTING & ORGANISING
At our Day Hub, another team of volunteer’s sorts through the donations, making sure items are organised and allocated to our two kitchen areas and storeroom.
STEP 3: INTO THE KITCHEN!
Those who use our service are encouraged to use the kitchens themselves to prepare food, supporting choice and independence. We also have wonderful volunteers who come in to cook group meals for everyone to enjoy from a simple sausage butty to a delicious chicken curry.
STEP 4: SHARING MORE THAN FOOD
Whether someone prepares their own meal or joins in with a group meal our kitchens help bring people together, build connections and create a welcoming community.
Every donation and every volunteer plays a part in making this happen. It's teamwork, kindness and community in action!
