Smokey the bear took a seat in the Sherp at a recent truck night at South Ridge School. He’s had a busy fire season so far in the northland. Today brings some much needed rain, but remember to keep a close eye on your campfire and have a plan ready to put it out when the time comes. (Tanya 7396 photo)

Members Dani (7316), Diana (7337), Katie (7380), and Tanya (7396) pose by “Big Z,” the larger of the our inflatable Zodiac boats used for water rescue and patrol operations. Their assignment yesterday was at the Memorial Day Parade in Duluth. Lots of candy was thrown to excited kids (don't worry, members got a sucker or two off the top for themselves, too). It’s always a great time when we get to participate in community events. Don’t forget to wear your life jackets, and above all, be safe out there, eh?

Friends, we hope your grillables are just right, the sides delicious, your lawn mower and boat motor start on the first pull, the fish bite on the first cast, and your family is close and healthy. But please take a moment today...and remember.

Friends, we've had a busy start to the season, and we're at the start of the long holiday weekend. As you make plans to go out and enjoy all that our region has to offer, be safe: remember to bring the right equipment, operate safely based on the circumstances and the weather, communicate with your friends and family about your plans if you're going into the backcountry, and wear your life jackets on the water.

Today's photo comes from the May 14 rescue that's been in the news this week. It was a happy ending to a rough day for a couple of canoeists. Pictured are two of our canoe teams battling the fading daylight as they prepare to paddle toward the pair of stranded canoeists, marooned on an island near Lake One.

The team faced a multitude of challenges, including rain, high water, rapids, and several portages, for a wilderness rescue in the heart of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Ultimately, the pair of stranded canoeists were rescued by the Minnesota Air Rescue Team once storms had passed and they were clear to fly. But our team was there, just in case, because even the best laid plans need contingency plans. (Jordan 7365 photo)

Pictured here is Smiley Mike and Applicant Cole during a training on 5/8 at the North training pit.

Our search and rescue team hits the trails to sharpen their ATV skills. Four-wheeler training builds the confidence, precision, and terrain awareness our volunteers need to navigate rugged backcountry, reach remote patients, and operate safely under pressure. (Jordan 7365 photo)

Members Jenny, Hannah and Ben work a track of sign behind the EOC at last night's training.
In anticipation of a full tracking course coming up, we held a classroom and field training where folks learned about sign: the evidence that gets left behind wherever we go. Learning to find, interpret and track sign helps us to find missing subjects. From footprints in mud, to the subtlest turn of grass and leaves, they're skills that can make a huge difference in the outcome of a call. (Dana 7391 photo)

In this beautiful shore of Lake Superior shot...

Just kidding, we wish! To continue the tradition, our patch made a recent trip to Costa Rica where 2 of our members took a break from the action, kicked back and relaxed. Coincidentally, another rescue squad member was just minutes down the beach. (7365 Photo).

We keep a map with pins and photos of where our patch has travelled at our Emergency Operations Center in Duluth.

Truck 606 is one of our newest in the fleet. A 2025 GMC Sierra 2500, 606 is staged in upper Lakeside in Duluth and outfitted with water rescue and general purpose capabilities. Having vehicles spread across our communities helps to reduce response times on a variety of calls within a county that is almost the size of New Jersey. With the rain and sun we've had it's hard to believe that coating of snow was just a couple of weeks ago, eh?(Sophie 7350 photo)

Sometimes the evening sky puts the world into perspective and our place in it more succinctly than any conversation, book, or event. This evening had that magical depth of space that the human eye perceives but technology fails to grasp.

Orion hovered on the horizon watching over the waxing crescent moon with Venus blazing its own beacon, the light somehow distant and far but right there gives a sense of awe and change.

As the evening sky switches from winter to summer we too have been busy gearing up for the switch to warmer weather. This week we prepped the winter gear for the summer storage, winter machines for a protected off season and began sorting through the summer gear that has peaked at us from our gear stash like a hunting dog being left home when the shotgun comes out. The summer machines prepped and ready to come out. The in between season is almost over. Training and equipment being switched over is just another sign we survived another winter. Be safe out there!
