UNISON is Britain and Europe's biggest public sector union with more than 1.3 million members. Our members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and in the essential utilities. They include front line staff and managers working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, the police service, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector.

Finally, the UK Covid-19 inquiry was published last week. In its many damning findings, among them were how the care system was failed by the government, for both service user and staff alike. We say it's time to build on the damaged parts of the social care system and deliver the national care service everyone needs.

Some numbers speak for themselves. 94% of people say public services workers are on what public services are built. 74% of people want higher taxes for big corporations. 69% support more taxes for the mega-rich. 61% want banks to do the same.

We celebrated a year of the End Violence at Work Charter outside Gateshead Civic Centre's Council Chambers today, with a visit from Gateshead Council Chief Executive Dale Owens to reaffirm the commitment. The integral work of our branch officer John Watson brought this about, and on the matter, he said:

"September marked the first anniversary of Gateshead Council's decision to adopt UNISON's End Violence at Work Charter. One year on, our commitment remains as strong as ever. The last 12 months have seen our branch officers and workplace reps continue to work closely in partnership with management to ensure every member of staff remains safe in the workplace. UNISON strongly believe that dignity and respect are the foundation of a healthy workplace and that every voice matters. We will continue to support Gateshead Council on a zero tolerance policy towards violence, aggression and abuse, ensuring clear safeguards in the workplace."

We show up - will you?

It's time to take our demands to save public services to Westminster. On Tuesday 13th October, UNISON activists will be lobbying for the vital tenets of public services: invest in infrastructure, delivering fair pay, and making sure the wealthiest pay their fair share.
