Today we have announced the latest proposals for the planned Metro extension to Washington. The proposals outline three new stations – located at Follingsby, Washington North and Washington South - as well as seeing the line cross the River Wear via the Victoria Viaduct, travel towards and under the A19, and connect with the current network at South Hylton.

The 13km Metro extension plays a critical role in North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ vision to transform local transport and create an integrated network spanning the region.

Throughout September, we'll be holding a series of public engagement events where you can:

We rely on teachers to educate our children, the least we can do is make sure they want to come back after the summer.

Vandalism on a Grand Scale brings Tish Murtha’s landmark body of work back into print in a newly reworked publication, with a new sequence, updated texts and a renewed sense of purpose for younger generations.

Born in South Shields in 1956, Murtha returned to Newcastle from university to document life in her Elswick community, capturing the social impact of industrial decline.

This new edition returns one of the defining works of British documentary photography to circulation.
Tish Murtha’s photorgaphs are also exhibiting at Baltic until April 2027.

🚨 National Emergency Warning: Broken Fridge Backlog Threatens Communities

A mounting crisis is hitting waste centres across England and Wales as extreme heat waves cause a surge in broken fridges and freezers, paired with a severe shortage of specialist processing plants. With 26 councils already suspending collections and booking restrictions tightening, local areas face a massive backlog.

Liberal Democrat MP for Didcot and Wantage, Olly Glover, has sounded the alarm, warning that shutting down legal disposal routes drastically increases the risk of rogue operators and desperate residents turning to illegal fly-tipping. Fridges contain hazardous gases that require safe, specialist recycling, but current UK infrastructure is buckling under the pressure.

Local leaders are calling on the government to step in, force white goods manufacturers to shoulder the burden, and protect communities from a wave of illegal dumping.
