President Elect!!!!

I still can’t really believe it. Thank you so much to everybody who has voted and put their trust in me to be the next President!! I’m so excited to continue the work of and can’t wait to start making some really crucial change.

Thank you also to everybody who has supported me throughout this process, to my fellow candidates for being friendly faces all the way along and to all the societies, clubs + Memecastle for endorsing me and lending me your support!

My final manifesto point nearly 24 hours before voting closes!!!! Prioritising inclusivity + accessibility throughout the union, university and my work as your President.

As a disabled student, I’ve had to really fight hard to get accommodations met for me and even then they often fall short and are forgotten about. Inclusivity and accessibility and things that are so often an afterthought in decision making - they come as a tick-box exercise or are completely forgotten until after an event and someone has raised it. This needs to change and these considerations need to be integrated instead of being an afterthought.

Nearly 90% of Newcastle Uni students say that they have been, or know some by who has been spiked. 90%. That figure is absolutely astonishing. Spiking affects so many students and there isn’t currently any support really provided for students who go through this. They aren’t supported when they report as they are gaslit about being ‘too drunk’ and are then told there is no evidence.

Telling people how to keep ‘safe’ on a night out and providing cautionary measures like drink spiking test kits is not good enough. Yes the test kits (or drink covers etc) can be reassuring and should be free and accessible to all students, but this fails to actually tackle the cause of this problem.

Spiking must be taking seriously as 90% is ridiculously high. It’s time to do something about this.

Manifesto point four…make sustainability accessible throughout the uni!!!! 🌱🌱🌱

I feel that these points are very basic things that the University should be doing to be able to make sustainability accessible to students. I am very interested in introducing a Sustainability Officer into the union as a liberation officer to ensure that we are integrating climate consciousness into all our decisions as a Union. I’d also want to work to put on educative events and increase accessibility to these types of things. Often anxiety around climate doomism can be a barrier for people engaging with these important issues so I would also work to address this!

Manifesto point three! Ensuring value for money + equal opportunities for all students within the union🌟💖🥳

Currently the participation bursary is only open to 1st + 2nd years, and is already overwhelmed with applications each year. There is a clear need for it but it does not stretch far enough. All students should have the opportunity to engage in activities outside of their degree such as societies and sports clubs, but also to get involved with Give It A Go activities. Equally, resources for their degree can be a barrier for students as they may not be able to afford the materials they need - I feel the participation bursary should extend to this.

You also currently have to pay for the pleasure of simply being in the sports hall building if you’re a part of a club that is using those facilities. Sports clubs can already be expensive and this can be yet another barker for many students in participating.

I want to ensure that students are able to embrace the whole University experience outside of the degree, without having to contemplate whether they can afford to participate.

Manifesto point two! Swipe to find out how I will implement a unilateral, supportive and informed approach to student well-being. ✨🪐💖

It’s no secret that students’ experiences with the well-being service drastically differ from them being good or bad. There is a distinct lack of continuity and many students, especially those from underrepresented groups are falling through the gaps, being told that their case is too severe and then being told where to refer out. There is no support offered to bridge the gap whilst they wait for support elsewhere.

I want to change this! The well-being service must be inclusive, accessible and consistent in its support that it provides to students. I want to help make this happen.
