You can’t understand a country from its capital alone. That’s why our press officer, Elisabeth, joined press officers from EU embassies and the EU Delegation for a trip to Alabama, where she met faith leaders, strategists, journalists and students and saw Huntsville’s research and space industry up close. Thank you to everyone who hosted us. And yes, diplomats stay neutral, which is why we’re saying both: Roll Tide and War Eagle. 🏈

German basketball legend Detlef Schrempf made NBA history, paving the way for generations of international players in a uniquely American sport. 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Originally from Leverkusen, Germany, Schrempf moved to the U.S. to pursue basketball, playing high school ball before continuing his career at the University of Washington and joining the NBA in 1985. A two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year, he became the first European All-Star and the first German player to reach the NBA Finals.

In this installment of Shaping 250 — Faces of the German American Story, we celebrate Schrempf’s game-changing journey from Germany to the NBA and his lasting impact on American basketball. 🏀⛹️‍♂️

Growing our economies together – What the Invest in Germany Summit means for the US 👇

The Invest in Germany Summit has wrapped up in Berlin earlier this week. Investment pledges so far total at more than €230 billion, a vote of confidence from companies worldwide.

For our American friends: a strong Germany means a strong transatlantic partnership. US companies gain access to the EU single market, a skilled workforce, and a leading innovation landscape, with returns that benefit businesses and workers back home.

What’s next? Less bureaucracy, faster permitting, and better infrastructure to make Germany an even better place to invest.

“An unprecedented blow to Putin’s war economy” — Foreign Minister Wadephul

The EU last week adopted the most comprehensive sanctions package in its history, with well over 1,600 new names added to the sanctions list. Thus, in one fell sweep, we are increasing the number of sanctioned individuals and companies by more than half of those already listed to date.

The sanctions package is specifically aimed at Putin’s war economy: As EU member states, we are sanctioning 1,569 companies and their executives from the military and armaments sector. They are all classified by the Russian government as essential for its military aims. In addition, we are imposing sanctions on individuals who ran as candidates or participated in the elections for the Duma (Russian parliament) in the territories of Ukraine illegally occupied by Russia.

The sanctions are also a response to Russia’s brutal attacks on Ukrainian civilians in recent weeks—and to its escalating hybrid attacks against Europe, including the attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport. With the targeted sanctions, we are hitting manufacturers of drone or radar technology or producers of ballistic missiles, who share responsibility for the missile terror being waged against Ukrainian cities. Last week alone, over 150 civilians died in Ukraine in overnight airstrikes.

The sanctions are all aimed at raising pressure on Russia to finally negotiate peace for Ukraine. “The message is clear: Russian cannot and will not win this war,” Foreign Minister Wadephul stressed.

Germany is open for business! 🇩🇪

The first Invest in Germany Summit has just taken place in Berlin. Business leaders and investors from around the world came together to shape the future of Germany’s economy.

In September, Made for Germany announced that participating companies are investing €800 billion between 2025 and 2028. International companies are following suit with commitments of €230 billion. Germany is the only G7 country with a AAA rating from all major rating agencies. Its debt-to-GDP ratio is in the international mid-range, giving Germany more room to maneuver than many other countries. For investors, that means stability and reliability.

We look forward to deepening our partnership with the United States and with companies across America.

🪖 The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting took place in Washington this week, with 40,000+ attendees, 750+ exhibitors, and 90+ countries represented.

The AUSA Annual Meeting is more than just a trade show. It's a strategic platform that connects military leaders, industry innovators, policymakers, and international delegations.

Multiple German companies were represented, a reminder of how closely German and American defense industries work together. Keep an eye out for German-American cooperation, not only in military operations but also in the defense industry! 🇩🇪🤝🇺🇸

🛡️ LtGen Heico Huebner, Vice Chief of the German Army, was the highest visiting German Representative, with further colleagues from the Bundeswehr Office for Defense Planning, and the Army Concepts and Capabilities Development Center present.
