🎬 ARNOŠT LUSTIG AT 100 | DIAMONDS OF THE NIGHT

The Embassy of the Czech Republic commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of acclaimed Czech Jewish writer and Holocaust survivor Arnošt Lustig with a special screening of Diamonds of the Night (Démanty noci).

Directed by Jan Němec, this haunting psychological drama is based on Lustig’s autobiographical story Darkness Casts No Shadow and draws on his own experiences during the Holocaust.

Following the screening, special guest Desson Thomson, former Washington Post film critic, will reflect on the film, Lustig’s extraordinary life and literary legacy, and his own friendship with the celebrated writer.

🎷 SAKOBI at DC JazzFest 🎷

Join us on Sunday, September 6 at 8:30 PM at Pearl Street Warehouse in Washington, D.C., for Czech jazz trio SAKOBI as part of the EU Mini-Fest at DC JazzFest.

SAKOBI features Vilém Spilka (double bass), Radek Zapadlo (saxophone), and Martin Kleibl (drums). Having played together for years in various groups, they share a deep musical connection and intuitive onstage chemistry. For SAKOBI, Vilém Spilka made a bold move from his primary instrument, guitar, to double bass. This shift brought a fresh sonic identity and new compositional direction to the trio.

Stylistically, SAKOBI resists easy categorization. Their music draws from the jazz tradition and other African American styles, while weaving in influences from Moravian and broader folk music. The result is dynamic, colorful, and full of personality.

SAKOBI will be featured as a part of the DC JazzFest’s EU Mini-Fest, presented in collaboration with the EU Delegation to the United States as a musical celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Their performance at the DC JazzFest is made possible through the support of the City of Brno.

📬 Postcard from South Moravia: LEDNICE 🏰🌿

Step into a storybook at Lednice Château, one of Europe's most magnificent neo-Gothic residences. Once the lavish summer retreat of the Liechtenstein family, the château was transformed into its fairytale appearance during the 19th century.

🌺Surrounded by romantic gardens, winding canals, tranquil lakes, and elegant pavilions, Lednice forms part of the UNESCO-listed Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, one of the largest designed landscapes in Europe.

🛶Glide through the château park on a scenic boat ride, climb the historic Minaret, a 60-meter (197-ft.) ornamental tower with breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards and countryside. Explore the magnificent Palm House, one of Europe's oldest historic greenhouses, home to hundreds of tropical and subtropical plant species.

🔍 Closer Look: The Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape spans nearly 300 square kilometers (116 square miles), making it one of the largest designed landscapes in Europe.

❄️Cool Fact: Lednice comes from the Czech word led ("ice"), referring to a cool or icy place. Centuries later, the Czech word lednice came to mean "refrigerator," since early refrigerators functioned much like iceboxes!

Today, we commemorate the Memorial Day of the Victims of the 1968 Invasion and the subsequent occupation by Warsaw Pact troops. This day is dedicated to remembering all those whose lives were tragically affected by the events of August 1968. We shall never forget. 🕊️
