🦇✨ Bat Appreciation Week: BAT-tastic Fun Facts! 🌎

Think you know bats? These incredible flying mammals are full of surprises! Let's discover some fascinating facts about bats around the world! 🦇

🪽 Masters of Flight! Bats are the ONLY mammals capable of true powered flight!

🥇 Faster Than a Cheetah? Mexican Free-Tailed Bats have been recorded reaching ground speeds of nearly 100 mph during flight, faster than a cheetah's top running speed!

🔊 Seeing with Sound! Many bats use echolocation, sending out high-pitched calls and listening for returning echoes to navigate and hunt in darkness.

🪲 Tiny Pest Controllers! Insect-eating bats can consume hundreds of insects in a single hour, helping naturally control insect populations!

🕰️ Long-Lived Little Mammals! Some bat species can live over 30 years, with one wild bat recorded living at least 41 years!

🌺 Nature's Gardeners! Bats help pollinate plants such as agave and certain cacti while spreading the seeds of fruits like figs and mangoes!

🦇❌ Bat Appreciation Week: BUSTING Bat Myths! ✅🦇

Bats have a spooky reputation, but how much of what you've heard is actually TRUE? Let's separate bat myths from bat facts! 🔍

❌ MYTH: Bats are blind!
✅ FACT: Bats can see! Some species have excellent low-light vision, while others use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark.

❌ MYTH: Bats fly into people's hair!
✅ FACT: Bats are skilled fliers! If one swoops near your head, it's likely chasing insects, not your hair!

❌ MYTH: All bats drink blood!
✅ FACT: Only THREE of the world's 1,400+ bat species feed on blood! Vampire bats make small cuts and lap up blood rather than sucking it.

❌ MYTH: Most bats have rabies!
✅ FACT: Rabies is uncommon in wild bat populations. However, never handle a bat with bare hands! Any possible bite, scratch, or other exposure should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

❌ MYTH: Bats are mice with wings!
✅ FACT: Bats aren't rodents! They belong to their own mammalian order, Chiroptera, meaning "hand-wing." They're also the ONLY mammals capable of true powered flight!

❌ MYTH: Bats attack people!
✅ FACT: Healthy bats generally avoid humans and aren't naturally aggressive. They may bite in self-defense if handled or threatened.

❌ MYTH: All bats live in caves!
✅ FACT: Many bats roost in trees, beneath loose bark, in rock crevices, under bridges, and even in buildings!

💚 Bats aren't something to fear! These remarkable mammals help control insect populations, pollinate plants, and disperse seeds around the world.

🦇🌎 Bat Appreciation Week: What's on the Menu for Bats Around the World? 🍌🪲

Did you know that not all bats eat insects? While all of Ohio's native bats are insectivores, bats around the world have some surprisingly different diets! Let's explore what these fascinating flying mammals eat! 🦇

🪲 Insectivorous Bats (Insect-Eaters)
- Feast on moths, beetles, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects.
- Provide natural pest control that benefits ecosystems and agriculture.
- 🦇 Examples: Little Brown Bat and Big Brown Bat.

🍌 Frugivorous Bats (Fruit-Eaters)
- Enjoy fruits such as figs, mangoes, guavas, and bananas.
- Help forests grow by dispersing seeds across tropical ecosystems.
- 🦇 Examples: Large Flying Fox, Egyptian Fruit Bat, and Black Flying Fox.

🌺 Nectarivorous Bats (Nectar-Eaters)
- Use specialized tongues to drink nectar from flowers.
- Serve as important pollinators for plants such as agave and certain cacti.
- 🦇 Examples: Lesser Long-Nosed Bat and Mexican Long-Tongued Bat.
🦎 Carnivorous Bats (Meat-Eaters)
- Hunt frogs, lizards, small birds, rodents, and sometimes other bats!
- Some can detect the sounds of their prey to locate their next meal.
- 🦇 Examples: Fringe-Lipped Bat, Spectral Bat, and Greater Noctule Bat.

🐟 Piscivorous Bats (Fish-Eaters)
- Use echolocation to detect disturbances on the water's surface.
- Scoop fish from the water using their large feet and sharp claws!
- 🦇 Examples: Fish-Eating Myotis and Greater Bulldog Bat.

🩸 Sanguivorous Bats (Blood-Eaters)
- Only THREE bat species in the world feed on blood, and none live in Ohio!
- 🦇 Common Vampire Bat: Primarily feeds on mammals, including cattle and horses.
- 🦇 White-Winged Vampire Bat: Primarily feeds on birds.
- 🦇 Hairy-Legged Vampire Bat: Primarily feeds on birds.
💚 From controlling insect populations to pollinating flowers and spreading seeds, bats play important roles in ecosystems around the world!

Thank you to everyone who attended the "Toilet Paper" ribbon cutting at Canal Park this morning. We are very excited to announce that the new vault toilet at Canal Park is in service!

This project took approximately two years to apply for grant funding, secure all of the necessary permitting, locate a vendor capable of designing and engineering a floodway rated structure, hiring a contractor to construct the building - and of course the final touch is filling the toilet paper dispenser and hand sanitizer.

This project was made possible by Pickaway County Park District property tax levy funding, a grant from NatureWorks through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, a grant from the Dunlap Foundation through the Pickaway County Community Foundation, and a grant from the Brooks Yates Opportunities Board.
Please enjoy this new amenity and treat it with respect so that the community can use it for many years to come.

The Pickaway County Park District is proudly funded by a 10 year property tax levy. The current levy expires in 2027.

Looking for a fun, hands-on fall activity? Join the Pickaway County Park District for our Fire C***r Workshop!

🌶️ Discover the art of making fire c***r, a traditional herbal vinegar infusion packed with fresh roots, vegetables, citrus, and flavorful spices!

During this workshop, you'll:

🍊 Explore the history and traditional uses of fire c***r and its ingredients.

🌿 Learn how to prepare and customize your own unique blend.

🫙 Chop, mix, and create your very own jar of fire c***r to take home and finish infusing!

✨ The best part? You'll leave with your own handcrafted fire c***r blend and the knowledge to make more at home!
