Join the Pickaway County Park District in celebrating America's 250th anniversary by making patriotic appliques! Whether you're a beginner or a master, all skill levels are welcome.

Sewing machines an equipment provided, but you're welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Wild Threads: Quilting Recap!🧵🐦🌳

The Pickaway County Park District and OSU Extension had an amazing time over the past few months making nature themed quilts! Participants got to learn about foundation paper piecing quilting and sharpen their skills while making 9 squares of native Ohio bird species and trees!

Would you like to participate? There will be 3 Wild Threads Saturday classes over the summer, and in the fall another quilt series will return. Watch our Eventbrite and Facebook for more details!

🌺 Featured Bloom: Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
Also known as Eastern Red Columbine

A beautiful native wildflower, Wild Columbine brightens woodlands and rocky slopes each spring with its striking red and yellow blooms! 🌿

🌱 Identification & Bloom
• Blooms April–July
• Grows 1–3 ft tall
• Takes 2–3 years to bloom from seed
• Seeds require 30–60 days of cold to germinate

🐝 Pollinators & Reproduction
• Pollinated mainly by Ruby-throated Hummingbirds ❤️
• Also visited by bumblebees, hawk moths, and butterflies
• Spreads naturally through self-seeding

🦋 Fun Facts
• The flower’s unique nectar spurs can only be reached by pollinators with long mouthparts
• Wild Columbine cross-pollinates easily with nearby columbine species, creating hybrids
• It is an important host plant for the rare Columbine Duskywing Butterfly in Ohio

🌿 Wild Columbine is deer-resistant, low-maintenance, and thrives in rocky soil and light shade — making it a wonderful native plant for pollinator gardens and natural spaces!

This Memorial Day, the Pickaway County Park District pauses to remember, honor, and mourn those who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice, courage, and dedication will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend and enjoy the beauty of our parks and community, let us also take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who served selflessly for our nation.
