🌞🌎 Looking for a fun summer adventure for your child?

Jr. Experience Earth Camp is the perfect opportunity for children entering 1st and 2nd grade to get outdoors, get creative, and learn about the world around them through hands-on activities and exploration!

Throughout the day, campers will:
🐝 Learn about amazing pollinators
🐸 Discover the life cycle of frogs
🖌️ Create art using soil
🌿 Make their own medicine bags
🏴 Design nature-inspired flags
🪲 Build bug hotels for beneficial insects

Whether they love crafts, wildlife, or simply spending time outside, there's something for every young nature enthusiast to enjoy.

Did you know Ohio is home to approximately 137 species of butterflies across six families?

Butterflies are often divided into two groups: "true butterflies" and skippers. While skippers have some moth-like characteristics, they share more structural traits with butterflies and are active during the day, earning their place among Ohio's butterfly species.

Why Are Butterflies Important Pollinators?

🌻 Long-Distance Pollination
Butterflies travel farther than many other pollinators, helping connect plant populations separated by distance. This cross-pollination strengthens the genetic diversity and resilience of wild plants.

🌼 Unique Flower Preferences
Butterflies are drawn to bright colors, sweet fragrances, and flowers with flat landing surfaces. Many plants depend on butterflies because other pollinators may overlook these blooms.

🌿 Host Plants Matter
Many butterfly species rely on specific host plants to reproduce. For example, Monarch butterflies lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed, which also serves as the sole food source for their caterpillars.

🌹 Supporting Agriculture
Butterflies help pollinate a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even important commodity crops such as cotton.

🌎 Indicators of Ecosystem Health
Because butterflies are sensitive to habitat loss and climate changes, a diverse butterfly population is often a sign of a healthy, thriving ecosystem.

At Wildlife Wonderers Camp, every activity is an opportunity to explore, investigate, and connect with the natural world.

Students entering 5th, 6th, and 7th grade will enjoy a day filled with hands-on learning as they:

🐝🌼 National Pollinator Week: Bees! 🌼🐝

Ohio is home to roughly 500 species of bees—and nearly all of them are native!

Native bees include bumblebees, sweat bees, mining bees, carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, mason bees, squash bees, and many more. While the European honeybee is commonly managed for honey, beeswax, and crop pollination, Ohio’s native bees play an especially important role in supporting local ecosystems.

Why are bees such important pollinators?

🌻 Specialized Pollination
Some bees can access pollen that other pollinators cannot. Bumblebees, for example, use “buzz pollination” by vibrating flowers to release hidden pollen.

🌼 Special Adaptations
Different bees are built for different flowers. Long-tongued bees, such as bumblebees and long-horned bees, can reach nectar deep inside tubular or funnel-shaped blooms.

🌷 Perfect Timing
Native bees have evolved alongside local plants, meaning their active seasons often line up with the blooming periods of Ohio’s native wildflowers.

🌹 Plant Partnerships
Some bees specialize in certain plants. Squash bees, for example, forage almost exclusively on plants in the Cucurbita genus, including squash, pumpkins, zucchini, and gourds.

🐝 Supporting Wildlife, Biodiversity, and Us
Bees help plants reproduce, strengthen local biodiversity, support wildlife habitat, and pollinate many of the foods and crops we rely on.

🐝🌼 National Pollinator Week | June 22–28 🌼🐝

Did you know that one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators?

National Pollinator Week was established by the U.S. Senate in 2006 and first celebrated in 2007. Led by the Pollinator Partnership, this annual event has grown into an international movement dedicated to protecting and celebrating the pollinators that keep our ecosystems healthy and our food systems thriving.

🌎 Pollinators play a vital role in nature by helping plants reproduce, supporting wildlife habitat, and contributing to the production of fruits, vegetables, and seeds.

🐝 From bees and butterflies to moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and even bats, pollinators come in many shapes and sizes—and each one has an important job to do!

Throughout the week, we'll be highlighting different groups of pollinators and exploring how they help support Ohio's native plants, wildlife, and ecosystems.

At Jr. Experience Earth Camp, young explorers entering 1st and 2nd grade will spend the day discovering the amazing things that happen in nature all around us. From buzzing pollinators to hopping amphibians, campers will learn through hands-on activities, creative projects, and outdoor exploration.

What can campers look forward to?

☀️🌿 Happy Summer Solstice! 🌿☀️

Today marks the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year and the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere!

On this day, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted closest to the Sun, giving us the most daylight of any day of the year. In Ohio, we'll enjoy more than 15 hours of daylight, providing plenty of time to get outside and explore nature. 🌳🦋

🌎 Nature is at its peak during the Summer Solstice:

🌼 Wildflowers are in full bloom
🦋 Butterflies and pollinators are busy visiting flowers
🐦 Young birds are learning to fly
🌳 Forests are lush and green
🐸 Frogs and insects fill the evening with their calls

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have celebrated the Summer Solstice as a time of abundance, growth, and connection to the natural world. It serves as a reminder of Earth's incredible journey around the Sun and the seasonal changes that shape life around us.

🦅 National American Eagle Day – June 20 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate one of America's greatest conservation success stories—the Bald Eagle!

National American Eagle Day commemorates the Bald Eagle being chosen as the national emblem of the United States on the Great Seal in 1782. It also serves as a reminder of the incredible conservation efforts that helped bring this iconic bird back from the brink of extinction.

🪶 A Conservation Success Story

📉 1967 – Bald Eagles were added to the federal list of endangered species due to habitat loss, hunting, and the effects of pesticides such as DDT.

⬆️ 1995 – Downlisted to Threatened as populations began to recover.

✅ 2007 – Removed from the Federal Endangered Species List after decades of successful conservation work.

🦅 Bald Eagles are thriving in Pickaway County!

As of January 2026, Pickaway County was home to 13 documented Bald Eagle nests, a remarkable sign of the species' recovery and the importance of protecting habitat along our rivers, streams, and woodlands.

🌳 Celebrate American Eagle Day by visiting Canal Park and hiking the Richards River Trail along the Scioto River. Keep your eyes on the treetops and riverbanks—you may spot one of these majestic birds soaring overhead or perched near its nest.

❓ Did You Know?

Young Bald Eagles don't get their iconic white head and tail feathers until they are about 4–5 years old. Before then, they are mostly brown and can easily be mistaken for other large birds of prey!
