According to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey and the Ashville Police Department’s Acting Chief Christopher Hempstead on April 8, 2026, at 8:55 AM the Pickaway County Communications Center received a 911 call from a male stating his brother just stabbed another person with a pocketknife. The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office dispatched the Ashville Police Department and Deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office to 521 Ashton Woods Drive Ashville, Ohio.

A very short time later a Teays Valley School Resource Officer called for a squad and stated there was a stabbing victim in the lobby at Teays Valley High School. Harrison Township Fire and EMS arrived on scene and transported the 14-year-old victim to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Simultaneously, Officers from Ashville Police Department and Deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene at 521 Ashton Woods Drive Ashville, Ohio and 16-year-old Daniel L. Hazard willingly came out of the residence and was taken into custody.

Detectives arrived on scene and throughout their investigation they learned that the victim of the stabbing had not been at the residence long. A struggle inside the residence ended up happening between Daniel Hazard and the 14-year-old before he got stabbed, multiple times. The victim was able to get away as well as three other witnesses to the incident and they ran to the school, where they were able to find the School Resource Officer.

Daniel Hazard was transported to the Multi County Juvenile Detention Center in Lancaster, Ohio where he was charged with Felonious Assault a Felony of the 2nd Degree, if committed by an adult.

Acting Chief Hempstead and Sheriff Hafey would like to thank Harrison Township Fire and EMS, and the Teays Valley local School District for their assistance throughout this series of events.

This incident remains under investigation by the Ashville Police Department and the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.

Today the Ashville Police Department was able to help a family in need this year. Capt. Thress and I would like to thank the Teays Valley East Middle School 6th grade class for donating the food for a Christmas dinner this year to a family. We would also like to thank the Ashville Police Officers, South Bloomfield Police Department, and PICCA for donating the gifts for the family. This was an amazing feeling seeing everyone come together to help support a family that didn’t ask for anything. We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and as always if you know of a family in need please let us know so we can do our best to help in anyway we can.
