This week marks House of Origin on the Senate floor, a key legislative deadline when Senate bills must pass to the Assembly to stay alive this year.
That is why it was so important for my bill, SB 942 to move forward. California cannot look away while people inside private immigration detention facilities face dangerous conditions without meaningful oversight or accountability. My bill establishes enforceable standards for health, safety, and humane treatment, while strengthening state oversight of private, for-profit detention centers. The bill does not endorse the detention system, but recognizes the reality that people are suffering and that California has a responsibility to protect basic human dignity and public safety.
Iβm proud that the legislation passed with unanimous bipartisan support. California is stronger when we protect the people who live, work, and raise families in our communities, and I am grateful to my colleagues for recognizing that dignity, accountability, and community safety should never be a partisan issue.
