🚔 Citizens Police Academy – Week 7 🎯

Week 7 of our Citizens Police Academy took participants to the range for an interactive look at fi****ms training and decision-making.

After meeting at the Rogers Police Department, participants traveled to the North Metro Gun Range, where they split into two groups. One group observed a live range demonstration led by Detective Corbin Bateman and Officer Avery Fischer, while the other participated in a fi****ms simulator session with Captain Matt Nelson. Midway through the evening, the groups switched so everyone had the opportunity to experience both activities.

The hands-on training highlights the extensive training, preparation, judgment, and ongoing practice required of law enforcement officers. From decision-making in realistic scenarios to observing fi****ms proficiency in action, participants gained a greater appreciation for the training and professionalism that help officers serve the Rogers community safely and effectively.

🚔 Citizens Police Academy – Week 6 🚁

Week 6 of our Citizens Police Academy gave participants a behind-the-scenes look at three important areas of modern policing: DWI enforcement, officer wellness, and drone operations.

Sergeant Adam Dupic led a presentation on DWI enforcement, helping participants understand how officers detect and investigate impaired driving and the role these efforts play in keeping our roads safe. Captain Jeff Beck followed with an engaging discussion on officer wellness, highlighting the importance of supporting the physical and mental health of law enforcement professionals and sharing the wellness initiatives implemented by the Rogers Police Department.

The evening concluded with Officer Fischer's presentation on our drone program. Participants learned about the laws and policies governing drone use, as well as the program's capabilities and limitations. To top it all off, attendees enjoyed a live drone demonstration, providing a firsthand look at how this technology assists officers in serving the community.

🚔 Week 5 of our Citizens Police Academy gave participants an in-depth look at Use of Force and our K9 Program.

We’ve officially passed the halfway mark in our 2026 Citizen Police Academy! The evening began with a discussion on use of force, covering federal law, state statute, and department policy. Participants learned about the range of force options available to officers based on the circumstances they encounter, from hands-on techniques to tools such as Repuls spray, the baton, Taser, and 40mm launcher. To provide firsthand perspective, two brave CPA participants volunteered to experience a live Taser demonstration.

🐕 The second half of the evening featured K9 Ares and Officer Palacek. Participants learned about Ares' journey from his initial training in the Czech Republic through 15 weeks of K9 school in Minnesota before beginning patrol duty in July 2025. The night concluded with a live demonstration showcasing the teamwork, training, and skills that make the K9 unit such a valuable public safety resource.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to our instructors for providing another engaging and educational evening. We're grateful for the opportunity to give community members a behind-the-scenes look at the specialized training that support public safety in Rogers.

🥈 We came in SECOND last year... and we need your help this year! 🏆

The 2026 Justin Morneau Winter Warm Up Coat Drive is underway, and the Rogers Police Department is once again competing against law enforcement agencies across Minnesota to collect winter coats for those in need.

Last year, participating agencies collected a record 3,150 coats and Rogers PD finished just shy of first place. This year, we're asking our amazing community to help us take the title while helping those who need it most.

All donated coats go to the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, supporting individuals and families facing homelessness and financial hardship.

☀️ So, while we're all enjoying this unexpected fall heatwave, take a few minutes to clean out those closets and find any new or gently used winter coats you're no longer wearing.

🔍 Week 4 of our Citizens Police Academy put participants in the role of investigator!

The evening began with our Investigative Unit, where School Resource Officer/Detectives Clayton Justen and Nick Zachman shared how they work to maintain safety and build positive relationships within Rogers High School, Rogers Middle School, and our elementary schools. Detectives Haley Tushar and Corbin Bateman then provided an overview of the Detective Unit, discussing the types of cases they investigate, crime trends, and the technology and resources used to support investigations.

To wrap up the night, participants got some hands-on experience by completing a palm-print activity and working through mock crime scene scenarios. The exercises demonstrated how detectives and crime lab professionals collect, process, and analyze evidence to help solve cases.

🚓 Our Citizens Police Academy continues to roll right along! Here’s a look at what participants have been learning these past two weeks:

Week 2: Last week attendees spent the evening with our Patrol Division, gaining insight into recruitment and training, field operations, patrol responsibilities, and the tools and equipment officers use every day. This hands‑on session gave participants a closer look at how our patrol team keeps Rogers safe and responds to calls across the community.

Week 3: Last night's session highlighted the many support roles that keep the department running smoothly. Our Community Service Officers shared how they assist with everything from traffic control to evidence handling. Our Community Engagement Specialist discussed efforts to build strong relationships across our growing city, and our Mental Health & Wellness Coordinator explained her work supporting individuals in crisis and officer wellness. We wrapped up with our Records Unit, learning how they ensure accuracy, compliance, and transparency in all police records.

📸 Our 2026 Citizens Police Academy is officially underway!

We welcomed 18 enthusiastic participants Wednesday night for opening night, where Chief Wills and Sergeant Herold kicked things off with a warm welcome, an overview of the weeks ahead, and a full tour of the Rogers Police Department.

This program remains one of our most impactful community engagement opportunities; giving residents a better insight into police operations, strengthening connections, and building trust through transparency and hands‑on learning. We’re excited for a great nine weeks ahead!
