Ottawa became the county seat in 1866, and construction on a courthouse began in May 1867 (pictured c.1887). In 1902, some citizens began to advocate for replacing the courthouse, saying that certain elements of the 1867 building were unsafe, and that it was too small. In 1909, voters approved a levy to build a new courthouse, which was completed in 1913.

Between March 23 and 27, 1913, 6-11 inches of rain fell in Ohio and neighboring states. In Kalida, the 1913 flood swamped town square. You can see Fanger Hardware on the left, and St. Michael’s Catholic Church on the right.
