Housing North's annual Northwest Michigan Housing Summit brought together state leaders, local officials, and developers to address Michigan’s growing housing challenges. Discussions focused on rising home prices, limited housing supply, income disparities, and the increasing financial strain on families across the state.

At the conference, Executive Director & CEO Amy (Joseph) Hovey underscored the core issues driving the state's housing challenges, gave updates on new tools including the Michigan Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, and the latest on the Statewide Housing Plan 2.0.

"We're taking our time to really look at what the data is telling us right now, where we're projecting the housing needs are across the state and working to listen to folks about what they're seeing with their housing ecosystems,” said Hovey. “We’re going to create a plan that will help lead how the state invests in housing over the next five years."

River’s Edge is officially open in Kalamazoo!

Chad Benson, Director of Development, represented MSHDA at Thursday’s ribbon cutting for 228 new rental homes near the Kalamazoo River and downtown.

MSHDA provided approximately $28.4 million in permanent financing. With 81% of the apartments reserved for households earning up to 60% of the area median income, River’s Edge expands access to quality homes at rents more people can afford.

Thank you to River Caddis Group, Standard Communities, the The City of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kalamazoo County and all the partners who stayed committed through the challenges and helped bring this project to completion.

We’re proud to have played a part in bringing more housing options to Kalamazoo and helping more people find a place to call home.

MSHDA currently has multiple career opportunities available across several divisions!

These openings offer the chance to support statewide housing initiatives, contribute to impactful programs, and advance the Authority’s mission of expanding affordable housing access in Michigan. Current open roles include:

Audit, Compliance and Fraud Investigations Manager, who will manage the agency-wide fraud investigation program, including telephone, email, and online fraud hotlines. This position will also serve as the Authority’s audit liaison, overseeing all internal audit activities.

Director of External Affairs, who will lead and support the Legislative, Communications, and Market Research teams. This role will develop and sustain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal elected officials, media professionals, and stakeholders in the housing ecosystem.

Financial Specialist, whose role is to analyze, structure, coordinate, and resolve highly complex financial and transactional issues involving MSHDA-financed multifamily housing developments.

Financial Specialist, who is responsible for the development, administration, analysis, and continued improvement of the Authority's Multifamily Portfolio Risk Rating and associated Loan Loss Reserve analysis.

Environmental Review Officer, who will serve as a technical resource to manage, audit, and oversee the work product received from, and the qualifications of, independent environmental consultants.

Thank you to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, State Senator Jeff Irwin, State Representative Kristian Grant, and Joseph Aragona - State Representative for their leadership and commitment to housing progress, including the creation of the Michigan Housing Opportunity Tax Credit.

The new state tax credit is a huge step forward in expanding affordable housing across our state. By working alongside the federal Low‑Income Housing Tax Credit, the state tax credit will strengthen the development pipeline, remove barriers, and help more projects move from idea to construction. It means more affordable homes, stronger tools for developers, and continued growth for communities statewide.
