"The connection is simple: when housing supply is limited, costs rise and income gains are diluted. When supply expands, workers keep more of what they earn and businesses have room to grow.

Michigan has momentum, but not yet at the scale this challenge demands. The priority now is ex*****on: faster approvals, clearer rules and coordinated investment across sectors. Progress should be measured in homes delivered and time saved, not just dollars committed."

Universal Design Education equips builders, designers, planners, and housing partners with practical tools to create environments that are accessible, intuitive, and inclusive for people of all ages and abilities.

This robust library of resources was developed with support from MSHDA and will help bring thoughtful, inclusive design to life. We're proud to support this work and excited to see the impact it will have on housing development throughout Michigan.

At this year’s Mackinac Policy Conference, housing is part of the conversation about Michigan’s economic future.

On Tuesday, May 26, MSHDA CEO and Executive Director Amy Hovey will join leaders from philanthropy, public policy and journalism for “From Policy to Production,” a panel discussion on lowering development costs and getting more homes built across Michigan.

Michigan’s housing challenges can’t be solved with one-size-fits-all solutions. True progress happens when communities have flexible tools and resources to respond to local housing needs. Over the last 2½ years, MSHDA has made great strides by offering regional housing partners and communities that flexibility with resources from the Housing and Community Development Fund (HCDF).

$200M HCDF Investment Impact (FY23–FY25)
Created 1,841 homes
Supported 84,826 households
Served 18,390 people experiencing homelessness
Enhanced 61 neighborhoods across Michigan

These investments are helping communities turn Michigan’s Statewide Housing Plan into action by increasing housing production, removing barriers, and strengthening communities across the state.

But the work isn’t finished. Michigan still faces a 119,000-unit housing gap, and maintaining HCDF flexibility will be critical to helping communities continue advancing locally driven housing solutions.

Today, at the Building Michigan Communities Conference, Jennifer Everhart was honored with the 2026 Terrence R. Duvernay Award for her outstanding contributions to affordable housing and community development in Michigan.

Jennifer serves as Chief Impact Officer at Cinnaire and brings more than 30 years of experience advancing affordable housing through innovative financing, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to equitable community development.
