🚨 MIOSHA has recorded its 13th and 14th workplace fatalities of 2026.

According to information reported to MIOSHA, on May 26, 2026, a 49-year-old transportation maintenance worker and a 51-year-old transportation maintenance worker were patching potholes along the right shoulder of northbound US-127 south of Holt Road. A passenger vehicle swerved to avoid the arrow-board truck, and the driver subsequently lost control. The vehicle entered the work area and struck both workers.

Roadside and highway work activities can expose workers to constantly changing conditions and serious struck-by hazards.

Every workplace fatality is a tragic reminder of the importance of protecting workers and promoting safe work practices on every jobsite.

MIOSHA recently participated in Construction Safety Week and National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction events across Michigan, helping raise awareness about fall hazards and the importance of protecting workers on construction sites.

Earlier this month, MIOSHA representatives joined employers, contractors and workers at several major projects statewide, including the New Vision Lansing 28-story Tower on Grand project in downtown Lansing, the Kalamazoo Event Center project, the Friendship Village expansion project in Kalamazoo and Henry Ford Hospital’s Destination Grand project in Detroit.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction. Stand-Down events provide an opportunity for employers and workers to pause, discuss hazards, review safe work practices and strengthen their commitment to workplace safety and health.

Thank you to industry partners including The Christman Company, EV Construction , CSM Group, Barton Malow and others who helped support Stand-Down events across Michigan this year.
