Michigan is committed to making our roadways safer. The SAFER by 2030 initiative brings together state agencies and traffic safety partners with the shared objective of reducing traffic fatalities by 30 percent by the year 2030. The initiative focuses on three core areas — Awareness, Engagement, and Enforcement — to address key traffic safety challenges and encourage responsible driving behaviors. Through coordinated efforts, we aim to protect Michigan residents and save hundreds of lives. National Trailer Safety Week (TSW), which takes place from June 7 to June 13, is focused on raising awareness about safe trailering practices nationwide. TSW is an annual campaign to improve roadway safety by educating end-users, dealers, manufacturers, and safety officials on proper trailer use, maintenance, and towing techniques. With millions of trailers on U.S. roads for business, government, and recreational purposes, TSW aims to reduce crashes and improve overall road safety by providing practical guidance and educational resources. June 6 is National Secure Your Load Day.
Unsecured loads not only endanger you, but also other drivers and pedestrians. Each year, about 730 people are killed and 17,000 more are injured because of objects in the road.
Tips for securing your cargo properly:
- Tie it down with rope, netting or straps.
- Tie large objects directly to your vehicle or trailer.
- Consider covering the entire load with a sturdy tarp or netting.
- Do not load excessive amounts of cargo in or on your vehicle or trailer.
- Always double-check your load to make sure it’s secure.
