All HPL locations will be closed on Friday, October 30, for HPL's Staff Professional Development Day. Locations will reopen with regularly scheduled hours on Saturday, October 31.

Hours and locations:

(Barbour Library is open 3-6 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of the month to accommodate Connecticut Foodshare distributions.)

We are proud to celebrate the top six readers from our annual Summer Reading Challenge, who were recognized at the Hartford Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, October 20.

Their dedication to reading inspires us to keep up the work. We are grateful to Hartford Public Schools for partnering with us to promote literacy and encourage lifelong learning. Congratulations to all of our outstanding readers!

Afternoon author talks for the win!

Attendees learned about the experiences that inspired Albert Cavanna book "Not Ready Yet", including his family’s journey, the challenges his parents overcame, and the values that guided him throughout his life. His heartfelt stories and insights on perseverance, discipline, and personal growth sparked meaningful conversations.

On Friday, October 9, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with the Consulate General of Peru in Hartford, who generously donated a collection of works by Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Laureate in Literature, to the Hartford Public Library. We also screened the Peruvian film "Manco Cápac" with insights from producer Roberto Pazos.

It was a wonderful evening of culture, partnership, and community. Thank you to all who joined us!

On Thursday, October 8, we celebrated Banned Books Week with a film screening and a discussion regarding "The Librarians".

The powerful Emmy Award-winning documentary highlighted the growing challenges of book bans and censorship, while reminding us why libraries remain essential champions of intellectual freedom and access to information.

A special thank you to Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning producer Janique Robillard of “The Librarians,” and Co-chair of the Connecticut Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee, Samantha Lee, for sharing their insights and leading such a meaningful discussion on intellectual freedom, censorship, and Connecticut’s Freedom to Read law.

Thank you all for helping us celebrate Banned Books Week and for continuing to support every reader's right to explore ideas freely.
