Bogong moths have been the talk of the town for the past few weeks and for a very good reason! 🔍

Each spring, mountain pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation, hungry for nutritious Bogong moths to eat. Bogong moths usually fly to the possums’ mountain home in the billions, but fewer moths have arrived over the last few years, causing additional stress on the already Critically Endangered mountain pygmy-possums. The tiny but mighty Bogong moth was itself added to the Endangered species list just last year with concerns rising for the long-term survival of this amazing Australian species.

While breeding or migrating the adult bogong moths feed on nectar of flowers such as 𝘌𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴, 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢 and 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘴, while their caterpillars eat a variety of herbaceous plants, including widespread invasive weeds like 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘢 (Capeweed). The caterpillars of the Bogong moth are commonly known as cutworms because they feed on plants by chewing them off at ground level. Talk about the circle of life 🌏

This is where you come in! Our friends at Zoos Victoria need your help. If you see a Bogong moth, snap a picture and upload the photo and location to Moth Tracker 🔗 https://www.zoo.org.au/moth-tracker/

Your photos will help scientists better understand how to help the moths on their journey to the mountains in years to come ⛰️

We didn’t choose the wombat life, the wombat life chose us 💚🙂‍↕️

Happy International Wombat Day to our furry friends! Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne is home to all sorts of Australian wildlife, and wombats are a special part of that community.

Thank you to our dedicated staff, Ollie and Ricardo Simao , for capturing these stunning shots of the wombats that live in the Bushland at Cranbourne Gardens. Make sure to keep a keen eye out next time you go for a walk through the Bushland!

Please remember to keep your distance if you are lucky enough to spot a wombat in the Bushlandand remember to drive slowly when entering and exiting the Gardens as wildlife may be crossing the road.
