Consulate General of Sri Lanka Melbourne The primary objective of the Sri Lankan Consulate in Victoria is to provide consular services to Sri Lankan expatriate community and Australian society

The Office of the Consulate General of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Victoria was established on 21 June 2013 in Melbourne with the principle objective of providing Consular services to the Sri Lankan expatriate community and Australians. The Consulate General has jurisdiction over Australian States of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Diplomatic relations between Sri Lan

kan and Australia were formally inaugurated in 1947. The establishment of a Sri Lankan diplomatic Mission in Victoria was necessitated by the growing numbers of Sri Lankan expatriate community, students, visitors and promotion of trade and investment, sports, tourism etc. Sri Lankans (formerly Ceylonese) started settling in Victoria since the 19th century. Their presence was first identified in the census conducted in 1871. The Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) in Victoria remained small until the abolishment of “White Australia” policy in 1973. The end of the White Australia policy saw increase of the arrival of Sri Lankan migrants to Victoria. According to Australian census of 2011, the number of Sri Lankans recorded in Victoria was 43, 991. Sri Lankans are the eight largest migrant population in Victoria. Out of this population 53% speak Sinhalese, 16% speak Tamil, and most others speak English. Religious diversity follows a similar pattern, with 42% Buddhist, 12% Hindu and 40% Christian. The Consulate General of Sri Lanka is committed to serve Sri Lankan Community and Australians who wish to avail its services and we have been endeavoring to meet the demand at our level best. We welcome your feedback on our services or any other matters in our face book page/ comments column on our website.

Meet Sudharma Karunarathna, an Australia Awards alumna from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 , who turned her teenage dream of studying in Australia into a reality! Completing her Master of Public Policy at The Australian National University in 2024 was just the beginning. Sudharma, an Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Defence in Sri Lanka, sought to bridge the gap between citizens' needs and government policy.

"As a government executive officer, I always felt a gap between citizens' needs and government policy decisions – a gap that required a deeper understanding to bridge," she explains.

Sudharma found the Australia Awards Scholarships to be a "well-structured program" that helped her define her goals and plan her future. She embraced every opportunity, from presenting research at conferences to networking with fellow scholars and even participating in a Global Academy program in China.

Living in Canberra, Sudharma immersed herself in Australian culture, gaining new perspectives and even working as an after-school care educator. This enabled her to make friends and understand the Australian education system and childcare policies. "These experiences taught me about cultural variations and how geographical differences shape people's lives," she says

The program also supported her family, allowing her son to grow and thrive under an advanced education system.

Now back in Sri Lanka, Sudharma is ready to apply her newfound knowledge and experience.

"I strongly believe that Australia Awards has opened the door for me to pursue this goal. It has equipped me with the knowledge, connections and experience to contribute to meaningful policy changes in Sri Lanka.," she shares.
