The U.S. Navy is working on RENAMING an aircraft carrier that was originally set to honor Dorris Miller, a legendary Black sailor for his heroic actions. Instead, the ship might be named after Trump. I am extremely disappointed, but not surprised, at Trump’s shameless efforts to prioritize his ego over the life and legacy of an American hero.

I was honored to join Will Sutton and Norman Robinson on WBOK to discuss the shadow hearing I held alongside my colleagues to hold ICE accountable for the murder of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.

We also discussed my recently introduced legislation, the Improving CARE for Youth Act and the State Offices of Women’s Health Support and Expansion Act, as well as my upcoming community resource events.

Today, New Orleans lost a giant, and I lost a friend.

Jerome “Big Duck” Smith was a freedom fighter, a mentor and a servant of this community who loved his people deeply.

Duck didn’t have much patience for excuses. If our children needed something, he was going to fight until somebody listened.

That was Big Duck.

It was never about Jerome. It was always about somebody else.

His civil rights work did not stop with the movement of the 1960s. He spent the rest of his life carrying that work forward through Tambourine and Fan, teaching generations of young people where they came from, what they were capable of, and why they mattered.

I am grateful that I had the chance to know him, work with him, laugh with him and, yes, sometimes be pushed by him. More than anything, I am grateful that I was able to tell him while he was still here what he meant to me and what he meant to this city.

New Orleans is better because Big Duck walked these streets.

To his family, his loved ones and the entire Tambourine and Fan family, my prayers are with you.

Rest well, my brother. Thank you for loving this city and its people enough to spend your life fighting for them.

Rest in power, Big Duck.

52 years ago, the Equal Educational Opportunity Act was enacted to provide equal access to education for all students and played a pivotal role in addressing segregation and civil rights issues in education.

Today that fight continues, and I’m committed to protecting our fundamental rights - both in education and beyond the classroom.

I’m excited to be hosting a Fireside Chat on Thursday, Sept. 3 @ 6 PM at Baldwin & Co. in New Orleans featuring statesman, my distinguished House colleague, and dear friend, Rep. James “Jim” Clyburn!

We’ll be talking about his new book, The First Eight — chronicling the first eight Black Representatives who helped shape the U.S. Congress and the lessons we can learn from their stories as we continue the fight for Black representation and voting rights!

The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Clyde Robertson, a professor at Southern University at New Orleans and director of their Center for African & African American Studies.

I joined on Talk 107.3 to discuss two bills I recently introduced: the bipartisan Improving CARE for Youth Act, which would increase access to mental health services for children enrolled in Medicaid, and the State Offices of Women’s Health Support and Expansion Act, which creates a grant program at HHS to create state offices of women’s health in states across the country.
