Today, we welcomed home more than 60 Maine veterans in Bangor as they returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., organized by Honor Flight Maine.

These veterans visited the memorials built in our nation’s capital to pay tribute to their service. It was deeply moving to join their families and friends in showing them the gratitude and respect they have earned, and to remind them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Dental care is an integral part of overall health care, yet too many families in Maine’s rural communities face long wait times and long drives to receive the services they need. In Waldo County, there are more than 5,700 residents for every dentist, more than twice the state average.

Today, I attended the grand opening of Penobscot Community Health Center’s newly renovated Seaport Dental Center in Belfast. This 8-chair dental clinic will serve approximately 7,200 patients each year and provide acute and walk-in dental care services.

I had a productive conversation with Lewiston Chief of Police Carly Conley and her incredible team yesterday about the challenges facing the Lewiston community, including the rise of violent juvenile crime, which is a real tragedy for everyone involved. The men and women of the Lewiston Police Department put their lives on the line every day to keep local residents safe. I’ll continue doing everything I can to support them and the critical work they do.

Today, I joined local first responders to break ground on Auburn’s new public safety building, which will bring the city’s Fire and Police Departments together under one roof.

One of the greatest needs in Maine is addressing our many obsolete public safety facilities. That is why I have worked hard to secure nearly $87 million over the past five years for 45 new or renovated stations throughout Maine.

I was proud to secure $2.5 million through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to help make Auburn’s new facility a reality and ensure that the city's first responders have the safe, spacious, and modern station they deserve.

Enercon Technologies is doing impressive work in Gray, employing hundreds of Mainers to design and manufacture products that support health care, national defense, and other important industries. I enjoyed meeting with the Enercon team today and seeing firsthand the skill and precision that have made this company a valued part of Maine’s advanced manufacturing sector.

Exciting news for Eastport’s America 250 Fourth of July celebration: the USS Lassen (DDG-82) will make a port visit to the city as part of the festivities.

This U.S. Navy destroyer, with a crew of approximately 330 sailors, will give Mainers a special opportunity to welcome and thank servicemembers who help keep our nation safe.

Eastport’s Fourth of July parade is such a special Maine tradition, and this year’s celebration will be even more meaningful as our state helps mark 250 years of American independence.

From Lexington and Concord to Little Round Top, Flanders Fields, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima, from Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan to our time, the men and women of our armed forces have added new and everlasting strands of valor, devotion to duty, and sacrifice to the story of our nation.

We gathered today at Southern Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Springvale for a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives in service to our country.

When we look down the rows of headstones, the flowers, and the flags, we see our history. It is a history written not by powerful conquerors, but by ordinary men and women who set aside the comforts of home to answer the call to defend liberty. By keeping the trust of Memorial Day, we tell the families of the fallen that they do not bear this burden alone. May God bless our service men and women, and may God bless America.

Freedom is precious and comes at a tremendous price. On Memorial Day and every day we must honor the brave men and women in uniform and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I was honored to be in Searsmont this morning for their Memorial Day parade.

It was incredible how many local families and first responders turned out in the pouring rain. In the face of tragedy, Searsmont has been a salient reminder of the resilience of our Maine communities and the kindness of our neighbors. As they continue to recover from the Robbins Lumber explosion, we stand with them and keep those affected, especially the family of fallen volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross, close to our hearts.
