Sayre Public Library is back to our regular Saturday hours! Starting today, September 12, we'll be open again from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays -- come visit us today!

The second session of STEAM-Tember was a great success! We made lemon volcanos, a blue foamy concoction, and then launched balloons with vinegar. The word molten came to mind while we were watching the acidic lemon react to the baking soda, but don't worry, the temperature never increased. The bubbling sound that they made was also very satisfying. We took our balloons outside so we could better understand how the vinegar and baking soda create gas. It's that gas that then is able to blow up the balloon! You can give these experiments a try at home, all you need is lemon, a little food coloring, and baking soda and you can make your own bubbling lemon volcano. For the balloon you need a plastic bottle with a small opening, like a water bottle, a balloon, vinegar and baking soda. Pour in the vinegar, then add some baking soda and cover the opening with the balloon. You will see almost immediate results!

The next STEAM-Tember session will be this Saturday, 9/12 from 1-2pm. We will be learning about the brain and doing some experiments to help us better understand our minds.

The next session of STEAM-Tember is tonight from 6-7pm. We will be taking a look at volcanos and their eruptions and then talking about all the different ways to describe them. No registration necessary, geared for ages 5 and up but all are welcome to join in.

Tomorrow, 9/10 from 6-7pm, is another session of STEAM-Tember. We will be combining literacy (in honor of international literacy day) with volcanic eruptions and chemical reactions. My enemies and I had a terrible storytime.

JUST KIDDING!!! This morning was all about opposites at storytime, my friends and I had a great time! There are so many opposites- big/small, tall/short, young/old, soft/hard, and alone/together just to name a few. Can you think of any others?
In the pictures you will see my friends and I playing with "sticky bubble gum" and "popping corn". We then sorted shapes from biggest to smallest and then counted them.

Next week 9/16 at 10:30, magic will be in the library and at storytime. Practice some magic words and get ready to be amazed!

Happy Labor Day! Sayre Public Library will be closed today, Saturday, September 5, and Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m. Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Yesterday's STEAM session was great; we had so much fun! My friends and I created process art, that means that we didn't follow any specific directions. We just did what ideas came into our minds. The challenge was to create a picture without using a paint brush. We first read a story about two friends who learn that there is not really a right or wrong way to create. As long as you are having fun and enjoying the process then it is going to be amazing!

We used straws to blow the paint around the paper. We did need to use brushes to get the paint onto the paper, but after that it was all air. The colors we used to start were the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. That way we could mix the other colors that we wanted. Full disclosure- by the end some of the friends were using the paintbrushes to create but just take a look at what was created!

Next Thursday, 9/10 from 6-7pm, in honor of international literacy day we will be creating volcanos with various items and talking about the different words used to describe them.
