Douglas County Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice, and Tim Freeman are excited to announce that Douglas County Senior Services is hosting a countywide Senior Resource Series to connect older adults, caregivers, and families with important services and support available throughout Douglas County. The free senior resource events will provide information about programs and services available to local seniors, including meal opportunities, in-home care services, family caregiver resources, and the Douglas County Senior Resource Booklet.

Staff will be available to answer questions and help individuals learn how to access services that support independence, health, and quality of life.

Each event will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include an opportunity for seniors to enjoy lunch at participating locations. The first two events in the series took place in Drain and Reedsport. Seniors who plan to attend lunch are asked to RSVP by calling (541) 440-3677.

The Douglas County Senior Resource Series is designed to make it easier for senior residents and their caregivers across the county to access information, ask questions, and learn about programs that help seniors remain active, live independently, and feel supported in their own communities.

Douglas County Senior Services manages seven rural Bistro Sixty senior dining sites in Glide, Glendale, Reedsport, Riddle, Sutherlin, Winston, and Yoncalla that prepare meals for seniors through our Dine-In and Meals on Wheels delivery programs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. All seniors 60 and up and their spouses are welcome. Hot meals are available from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm at each senior dining site. Senior Services staff know there are others in our communities who could benefit from our Meals on Wheels delivery program and/or meals at the Bistro Sixty senior dining sites. If residents know of friends or family who are unable to drive, need assistance with daily living activities, would benefit from hot meal delivery, or need other assistance, they are encouraged to call the Aging & Disabilities Resource Connection at Douglas County Senior Services at (541) 440-3677 or by sending an email to [email protected].

We need volunteers! Our rural senior dining sites and Meals on Wheels programs are successful because of the dedication of wonderful volunteers. Yesterday, the Oregon Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision denied parole for convicted murder and child ra**st Dustin Wallace following a lengthy and emotional hearing concerning the 2010 r**e and murder of five-year-old Sahara Dwight. During the hearing, Wallace himself acknowledged that he was not ready to return to society, and the Board ultimately determined that parole was not appropriate at this time. The Board also determined that he would not be eligible for another hearing for ten years, the max allowed by statute.

Wallace was convicted in 2010 for the heinous murder and r**e of 5-year-old Saraha Dwight in Roseburg, Oregon. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, in 2021, then Governor Kate Brown chose to commute the sentences of several convicted murders and other violent offenders under Senate Bill 1008, making them eligible for parole. Wallace’s case was one of those that was commuted.

The Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg and Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice attended the hearing along with Representative Virgle Osborne, Senator Christine Drazen, and Senator David Brock-Smith. They support the Board's decision and commend the courage of Sahara Dwight's family and loved ones who have continued to advocate for justice throughout this difficult and unnecessary process.

“No decision can restore what was taken from Sahara's family or erase the profound grief this tragedy has caused. The brutal murder of this innocent child remains one of the most heartbreaking and impactful crimes in Douglas County's history. Today's decision acknowledges the gravity of that crime and reinforces the importance of protecting our community. While we are grateful that public safety was carefully considered, Sahara's family should never have been forced to relive this painful chapter through the parole process,” stated Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg.

We are grateful to the victims' advocates, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and community members who have remained committed to ensuring that the voice of the victim was heard throughout this process.Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sahara's family. Their strength, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to honoring her memory continue to inspire our community.

Nine years ago, the Douglas County Public Affairs Office did not exist. Recognizing the importance of stronger communication, increased transparency, providing critical and timely emergency updates, and building stronger public engagement, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners created the Public Affairs Office with one primary goal — to better tell the County's story.

Today, the Public Affairs Office has evolved into an essential community resource. From delivering timely emergency information during wildfires and floods to coordinating public records requests, producing press releases, managing social media platforms, publishing newsletters, documenting County projects and supporting community events, the team works daily to keep residents informed, engaged and prepared.

During the past year alone, the office distributed 144 press releases, processed more than 320 public records requests, reached tens of thousands of subscribers through e-newsletters and captured thousands of photos and videos showcasing County services, projects and events.

The Public Affairs Office continues to play an important role in promoting transparency, sharing timely and accurate information and helping residents stay connected to what is happening throughout Douglas County. The office has also received honorable mention recognition multiple times in the annual Reader’s Choice Awards for Media Website.
