U.S. Forest Service - Umpqua National Forest The Umpqua National Forest is nestled on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains.

Explosive geologic events shaped the distinctive landscape on the 983,129-acre forest, and provide spectacular scenery as well as an abundance of natural and cultural resources. Visitors discover a diverse place of thundering waters, high mountain lakes, heart-stopping rapids, and peaceful ponds. The Forest is characterized by its many waterfalls, including the 293-foot Watson Falls on the North Umpqua Highway. The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. http://www.nationalforests.org/”

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife.

The season is changing. Below is the tentative closure schedule for campgrounds across the Umpqua National Forest. While these are tentative dates, they are also weather dependent and could change.

Campgrounds that remain open through the winter season will be first-come, first-served and payment will be required through the Recreation.gov app. Download the Recreation.gov app, create an account and put in a valid form of payment BEFORE you leave for your adventure. https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app

Umpqua National Forest in partnership with Patriot Restoration Ops (PROPS) worked to clear the debris from the North Umpqua River over the weekend. The two sweeper trees (one very large, one smaller) that were blocking the navigational channel at Boulder Hole are now cleared.

Umpqua National Forest in partnership with National Forest Foundation is hosting a National Public Lands Day volunteer opportunity on the Diamond Lake Ranger District. Volunteers will help restore the landscape by planting sugar pine trees as part of ongoing forest fire recovery effort. Located in the heart of the Southern Cascades, this iconic recreation area is a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts and local communities alike.

Spend the day giving back to the Forest and working alongside fellow volunteers to help grow the next generation of trees. Lunch and snacks will be provided. RSVPs ARE REQUIRED. Starting today, Umpqua National Forest is reducing the Fire Danger Level from ‘High’ to ‘Moderate’ and Public Use Restrictions from Stage 2 to No Restrictions.

When there are No Public Use Restrictions:
• Campfires in wilderness areas are allowed.
• Dispersed campfires are allowed.
• Personal chainsaw use is allowed at any time, subject to regulations, including a valid permit to cut firewood, which can now be obtained online: https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/forest/0615

While conditions have improved, visitors are reminded that wildfire potential remains present. Remember that all campfires need to be dead out before leaving your campsite. Drown, stir, and feel your campfire with the back of your hand. The fire should feel cold to the touch before leaving your campsite.

Umpqua National Forest in partnership with Patriot Restoration Ops (PROPS), recently installed new bumpers on the Diamond Lake North Shore Boat Dock. The Forest funded the project, while PROPS provided the crew and labor to complete the work with Forest oversight. Umpqua National Forest firewood permits are now available through a new online E-Permit system, eliminating the need to travel to a Forest Service office. Personal firewood is free on the Umpqua National Forests and allows a woodcutter to gather up to 10 cords per year for household use. With the new E-Permit system you can download and print your permit from home.

Following the recent rainfall, Umpqua National Forest is reducing the Fire Danger Level from ‘High’ to ‘Moderate’ and Public Use Restrictions from Stage 2 to No Restrictions, effective at 12:01 a.m. on September 11, 2026.

Recent rainfall has improved moisture conditions across the Forest. As a result, the following activities will be allowed starting on September 11, 2026 with No Public Use Restrictions in place:

• Campfires in wilderness areas are allowed.
• Dispersed campfires are allowed.
• Personal chainsaw use is allowed at any time, subject to regulations.
