🔄 The City utilized EPA and USDA grants to invest in innovative initiatives to promote food waste diversion and composting. This included expanding programs in schools that transform cafeterias into spaces where students participated in waste sorting and redistribution of surplus food, plus supporting efforts to encourage neighbors to start backyard composting by offering site-specific setup and training. 🌧️Utilizing an awarded Southeast New England Program (SNEP) grant for $300,000, we worked with residents and community groups to map where flooding is worst, starting in the Woonasquatucket River and West River neighborhoods to shape the fixes together. (1/3)

☀️ With the creation of our first-ever Green Revolving Fund, we have secured the future installation of solar panels at NINE City-owned buildings! The solar arrays will be installed at buildings occupied by our Parks Department, Public Property and PPSD schools!

📄Below, we highlight how we continue to ensure that those who are most impacted by the climate crisis in Providence are centered in the decision-making process for crafting and implementing solutions:

🏙️In the City's latest Comprehensive Plan, signed into law by Mayor Smiley in November 2024, climate justice strategies were implemented into the plan, focusing on building climate resiliency for Providence's future.

🌦️Objectives were included to prioritize investments in more sustainable infrastructure to combat flooding, reducing the City's fossil fuel emissions and investing in clean energy, as well as supporting more public health protections against extreme heat and air pollution.

❓What is the City's Climate Justice Plan collaborative governance and accountability priority?

🌆 Since Public Street was designated a public right of way in 2021, the Sustainability Department has been working with community members to improve conditions at the Public Street waterfront access point and will soon go out to bid for a construction contractor, aiming for the goal of starting project construction in the coming months. 🌧️ As Providence faces increased frequency of extreme rainfall and storms, investing in green infrastructure is crucial to slow the flow of excessive rain from flooding our streets and polluting our waterways. In Roger Williams Park, there are over thirty stormwater infrastructure practices, like infiltration basins and bioswales, which set the standard for what green infrastructure can look like throughout our neighborhoods with long-lasting investments.

💧You can see below an example of how an infiltration basin stores stormwater, then uses the natural filtering ability of the soil to remove pollutants from the stormwater.

Our Climate Justice Plan includes seven key sections, 20+ targets and over 50 strategies aimed at creating an equitable, low-carbon and climate resilient city. We will be highlighting one each week, starting with Lead by Example!

🏙️ We've prioritized the elimination of fossil fuels from municipal buildings by 2040 and developed a Decarbonization Roadmap to guide us.

♻️ The City's first-ever Green Revolving Fund was signed into law by Mayor Smiley, creating dedicated funding for renewable energy initiatives to better prepare Providence for the climate crisis.

🏢 Our Building Energy Reporting Ordinance (BERO) requires buildings to report their energy usage. The data is used to provide the public and property owners with energy consumption information to help understand how it compares to similar buildings. The goal is to help advance investments in energy efficiency that save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
