TRIO at KU TRIO SSS serves undergraduates at the University of Kansas who are first generation, have disabilities, or meet federal income guidelines.

KU TRIO SSS are two University of Kansas projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The University of Kansas TRIO SES & STEM programs advocate for access to higher education by providing comprehensive, personalized support services to empower eligible students to achieve academic success. Through a comprehensive system of individualized academic support services, we aim to prepare students for graduate school and success in a global environment. In addition to TRIO SES & STEM, we offer the Opening Paths to Individual Opportunity aNd Success (OPTIONS) college transition program for incoming freshmen, and we are home to KU’s chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) National Honor Society.

The KU Center for Educational Opportunity Programs has selected 12 new honorees to appear on KU’s seventh annual I Am First Too poster. The 2026 poster honors KU first-generation students, alumni, staff, and faculty who have excelled as role models, leaders, and advocates for first-generation student success. Please join us for the I Am First poster unveiling and reception on Monday, November 9th at 3pm in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

Honoree: Ashleigh Lee, M.S.J.

The KU Center for Educational Opportunity Programs has selected 12 new honorees to appear on KU’s seventh annual I Am First Too poster. The 2026 poster honors KU first-generation students, alumni, staff, and faculty who have excelled as role models, leaders, and advocates for first-generation student success. Please join us for the I Am First poster unveiling and reception on Monday, November 9th at 3pm in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

Honoree: Ara Melquiades Castellanos
Program: Student, Political Science & Business Administration; French and Music Minors
Quote: "Growing up, I never had anyone at home to tell me or guide me on what I should be doing to prepare for higher education. My parents always encouraged and supported me going to college, but I just didn’t know how. Being a first-generation student has meant knocking on doors and joining programs (like TRIO & GearUp) that have helped me get to where I am today. As I sit in KU’s lecture halls there are moments before the classes start where all I can think of is how amazing it is that I am here, in the rooms that my parents dreamed of, and my grandparents couldn’t possibly imagine. Being first generation is more than just being the first, it’s about being able to take on challenges that might seem impossible but through patience and hard work get achieved."

Yesterday, TRIO students came together to celebrate KU Homecoming at our annual Great Mug Giveaway! ❤️💙

Students and staff had a great time celebrating together, enjoying hot chocolate and snacks, and picking out their new mugs.

Our students had an amazing experience in Costa Rica during this year's Developing Global Perspective class! They learned about the unique environments of San José and Monteverde; connected with University of Costa Rica students and presented on student issues; painted buildings at the Children's Eternal Rainforest; and saw a tayra, coati, howler monkey, toucan, and so much more on the night and day hikes led by Pasión Costa Rica!

Interested in joining next year's class? Talk to your TRIO advisor about what to expect and how to locate funding for this experience designed for the first-time international traveler!

We're excited to share a new KU TRIO SSS award: the TRIO Trailblazer! A TRIO Trailblazer is a graduating senior and active TRIO SSS participant who epitomizes the TRIO values of academic success, active engagement, and reciprocity to the TRIO community.

One of this year's TRIO Trailblazers is Anjali Singh, who is graduating with a B.A. in Human Biology, a B.A. in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, a minor in Public & Population Health, undergraduate certificates in Gender, Law and Policy and Global Awareness, and with university honors. Anjali is passionate about community health options and has provided information and assistance on SNAP applications to TRIO SSS students and staff. We're going to miss seeing Anjali, but we know she's going to continue improving lives through her volunteer, research, and academic pursuits.
