Earlier this month, Jim Schmidt, the stepfather of Gabby Petito, who tragically lost her life to domestic violence in 2021, trained 120 law enforcement officers, prosecutors, probation officers, mental health providers, dispatchers, and other support organizations, to recognize and understand the vital importance of these investigations and how critical they are to the victims of domestic violence, while holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

The following day, Deputy Attorney General from the Colorado Attorney General’s office, Janet Drake, and Jim Schmidt educated our community at the Montrose Pavilion on the need for community awareness and the importance of ensuring domestic violence is taken seriously. This was part of a larger fundraiser, the “Safety Can’t Wait,” event raising money from artwork donated by local artists for this special auction to support long-term victim’s housing for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse in partnership with CASA of the 7th Judicial District in Montrose.

It was an incredible two days, and we want to thank the Montrose Police Department for sponsoring the event, and the 7th Judicial District Domestic Violence Task Force for organizing the event. Finally we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Jim Schmidt for turning his family’s tragedy into advocacy.
