This summer, environmental health specialists and epidemiologists are out in Broomfield's open spaces to collect ticks to help better understand what species are in Colorado, when they're active and what diseases they carry as part of the Active Tick Surveillance program through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment!

During a recent training session, staff collected samples including a female dermacentor tick. Remember that ticks are out and biting, so wear effective bug spray and always check yourself and your pets for ticks after being outside.

June is Colorado Bike Month!

On an average summer day, Broomfielders take 800 bicycling trips and over 31,000 walking trips on our streets, sidewalks and trails for utilitarian purposes, such as getting to school, shopping or going to work. Beyond just a commute, biking reduces our community's carbon footprint, improves air quality and promotes personal health and holistic wellness.

This year celebrates one decade of the US 36 Bikeway and the Flatiron Flyer Bus Rapid Transit, a regional 18-mile bikeway corridor connecting communities to transit stations, now supported by eight bike-n-ride shelters, which are secure places to store bikes while commuting to and from transit stations. Broomfield has been working to make connections to the Bikeway more convenient and safer, including Shep’s Crossing, the Industrial Lane Bikeway, underpass connections and more! In 2018 Broomfield helped complete the US 36 Bikeway wayfinding and is now rolling out Broomfield-wide wayfinding to help users navigate our trail system and reach their destinations efficiently.

While CCOB Parks and Open Space maintains trails, Public Works maintains 100 miles of on-street bike lanes. Over the last ten years, annual pavement maintenance projects have improved over 42 miles of on-street bike paths by widening lanes, adding buffers and adding green lane markings.

The City and County of Broomfield is always working to improve your trail and cycling experience. Please send questions or feedback to [email protected].

West Nile virus is spread by mosquito bites and can cause mild or severe illness in people. Continue to use an EPA-registered bug repellent, wear protective clothing and be diligent at dawn and dusk when outdoors, even in your own backyard, to avoid mosquito bites.
