Founded in 1850, Oakland Cemetery is one of Atlanta's largest public parks and a unique oasis of history, gardens, and green space.

Oakland Cemetery is one of Atlanta's largest public parks and a unique oasis of history, sculpture, botanical gardens and wildlife. Located less than a mile from the heart of downtown Atlanta, historic Oakland is the final resting place for many of Atlanta's pioneers, icons and leaders. Today, Oakland Cemetery is still used as a community park and is a valued green space in Atlanta. It is also a repository for stunning art and architecture. Elaborate mausoleums, soaring sculptures and effusive inscriptions speak of an age when the bereaved found consolation in extravagant expression.

Here are 5 tips for being a good house guest at 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙊𝙖𝙠𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙. 🖐️

1. Stay on the lit paths. Things hide in the shadows 🕸️
2. Do not try to enter locked mausoleums. No b&e!
3. Watch your step; historic brick can be bumpy.
4. Stay with your group & follow the spirit guides.
5. Respect the final resting place of Oakland residents.

Please note, the spirits love the company, but are very particular about how guests behave when welcomed into their “eternal homes.” Be a good guest and you’ll have a happy hosts! 👻🪦🌳

𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙚! 🌼 The annual Día de Mu***os festival at. Oakland Cemetery, hosted in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and Institute of Mexican Culture, will return Sunday, November 1 from 12PM-5PM!

Experience folkloric dances, crafts, food, and altars honoring lost family and friends. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

Celebrating nearly 30 years of service! ❤️🪦🌳

With heartfelt gratitude, we announce the retirement of Sam Reed, Sexton of Oakland Cemetery, effective November 18, 2026.

For nearly three decades, Sam has cared for Oakland’s grounds, supporting families during their most difficult moments, and building a strong partnership with Historic Oakland Foundation.

Sam’s dedication, compassion, and spirit of service have made a lasting impact on Oakland and all those who hold this special place dear. While he will continue working with the City to support a smooth transition, we are taking this opportunity to celebrate his remarkable contributions.

As Sam looks forward to a well-earned retirement, please join us in thanking him for nearly 30 years of extraordinary service and wishing him all the best in this next chapter!

Oakland’s Historic African American Burial Grounds is the resting place of Black artists, activists, community leaders, and entrepreneurs, who fought for equality and helped shape Atlanta. If you’ve joined us for of our tours, you may already know many of their stories.

This space is filled with beautiful gardens to honor those buried there, but also to create a welcoming, serene spot for visitors to learn & reflect. 🌸🪦🌳

Don’t forget that Oakland is also a public park—we invite you to stop by and find a moment of peace on one of our many benches. Is there a more perfect spot to spend an October afternoon?
