Coretta Scott King, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (“The King Center”) has been a global destination, resource center and community institution for over a quarter century. Nearly a million people each year make pilgrimage to the National Historic Site to learn, be inspired and pay their respects to Dr. King’s legacy. Both a traditional memorial and programmatic non

profit, The King Center was envisioned by its founder to be “no dead monument, but a living memorial filled with all the vitality that was his, a center of human endeavor, committed to the causes for which he lived and died.” That vision was carried out through educational and community programs until Mrs. King’s retirement in the mid-1990’s, and today it’s being revitalized. As we move into the second decade of the 21st century, The King Center is embarking on a major transformation into a more energetically-engaged educational and social change institution. Supported by our Board of Directors and an infusion of new thinking, The King Center is dedicated to ensuring that the King legacy not only remains relevant and viable, but is effectively leveraged for positive social impact.

Love. Liberty. Legacy. - in 1961, the first Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C. and were scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17.

Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who made bus trips throughout the South protesting segregation by using “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations. The courageous riders endured brutal police officers, enraged bystanders, and violent mobs.

The purpose of the “Freedom Rides” was to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Morgan v. Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and the federal government had done nothing to enforce them.

The Freedom Riders’ heroic nonviolent direct action led the U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission to ban segregation in interstate bus travel.

“The real question is whether we have the will.” RIGHT NOW, wherever you are, even if it’s late at night, pay attention to Dr. King’s words. How can we build the will to end poverty? End racism? End militarism?

🗣️ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s faith fueled his commitment to love and justice. We are excited to share more about that via this upcoming docuseries.

🎥 When faith calls…courage is the answer.

💡 What did Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believe and how did his faith influence his ministry, methodology of nonviolence, and movement work?

❌ With misinformation about Dr. King’s faith running rampant and with persistent efforts to disconnect following Jesus from focus on justice, it’s time to deepen our understanding and widen our faith-influenced work for a more just, humane society.

🎞️ Stay tuned for updates on the red-carpet world premiere of the ‘When Faith Calls’ docuseries at The King Center in Atlanta.

We are a global, interconnected humanity. In the words of Rev. Dr. , “Our hope for creative living in this world house that we have inherited lies in our ability to reestablish the moral ends of our lives in personal character and social justice.”
