The Williams King Family joined the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and Preservation District for a special preview of the restored Birth Home of Dr. King in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta.
Built in 1895, this Queen Anne-style home is where Dr. King, his older sister, Christine King Farris, and younger brother, A.D. King, were born and lived during early childhood. Born in 1929, Dr. King’s home life in Sweet Auburn shaped him and his siblings. The home stands as a testament to the legacy of the Williams and King families who compelled their children to be of service, stay true to their faith, and to love mankind. Dr. King lived in the home until 1941 when he was 12 years old.
The home reopens following a 3-year reconstruction project that improved the structural integrity and historically preserved the resource for visitors to experience the home as if Dr. King still lived there.
Technology will be used to create an immersive experience for visitors. These enhancements are funded through a $1.4 million grant from the National Park Foundation. The donor is Robert Smith’s Fund II Foundation.
Visitors will experience upgrades in the home’s mechanical systems, restored interior fabric and furniture, and audio and olfactory scent-based activations that replicate items like Sunday dinner and music lessons by Mama King.
• The Martin Luther King, Jr. Birth Home officially reopens to the public on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
• Tour Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily
(Tours are available on the same day with on-site ticket reservations. Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis)
The park staff looks forward to welcoming visitors to the Birth Home as we continue to interpret the places where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, lived, worked, worshipped and is buried.
