You can get up to £2,000 a year for each of your children to help with the costs of childcare.

If your child is disabled, you may get up to £4,000 a year.

You can get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as 30 hours free childcare if you’re eligible for both.

Coroner's Officers are appealing for help in tracing any known relatives of the following people.

Michael Pinkava, aged 42, of Harehills Road, Leeds LS8 5JJ who sadly died on Wednesday 26 August 2026.

Susan Greig, aged 65, of Alverthorpe Road, Wakefield, WF2 9PQ who sadly died on Sunday 30 August 2026.

Anyone with any information should contact the Wakefield Coroner's Office on 01924 302180.

We can’t believe it’s back to school time already! How has this summer gone so fast?

We had a blast at our spring and summer events with you all. 🥳

Take a look back at some of the highlights from a fantastic summer across Wakefield district, from Armed Forces Day and Pontefract Liquorice Festival to Proms at the Castle. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these events such a success. There’s been lots to enjoy and plenty more to come this year.

Get ready for a delicious day out in Castleford 🍽️🍷🍸

Food Drink Castleford takes place on Saturday 19 September in the town centre😊.

Whether you're looking for a great-value lunch, a family meal, or coffee and cake with friends, or just fancy trying something new, there’s something for everyone.

There will be a mini-beer festival hosted by local brewers, a pop-up bar, live music and entertainment. 🍺

Rhubarb Radio will host the event in the square, from 1pm – 9pm, providing great music, and creating a fantastic festival atmosphere throughout the day.

Enjoy performances on the Community Stage and keep an eye out for your chance to win one of our exciting food and drink-themed spot prizes.

Pop into Castleford market and enjoy a special programme of artisan craft stalls joining the market's regular traders for the day.

Rides for small children will be outside the market on Carlton Street, and a balloon artist and face-painter in the front entrance of the market.

This is a free to attend, family-friendly event, welcoming residents and visitors of all ages.

Child car seats can be tricky to fit.

Last year, Good Egg Safety advisors checked over 200 in the Wakefield district. And more than half were fitted incorrectly.

But it’s easy to fix this. 👍

Scam phone calls from people pretending to be from Wakefield Council are continuing.
Our Corporate Counter Fraud team are aware of the issue and are continuing to monitor the situation

The phone numbers being reported so far are:
• 0345 603 1539 – This is not a number we use to contact residents. Do not trust calls from this number
• 01924 302000 – This is a real Wakefield Council number. But scammers can make it look like they are calling from this number.

Do not accept any calls from 0345 603 1539 – even if it shows up on your phone as Wakefield Council. ❌ ⚠️

If you receive a suspicious call, you should report this to Report Fraud at https://orlo.uk/lhkvP

We asked Shared Lives carers across the district why they care..

Raph and his wife cared for Billy for periods of respite but more recently, Billy has moved in with them full time. After working at a residential college for people with special educational needs, Raph and his wife decided to become Shared Lives carers. Allowing them to have their own home whilst continuing to do what they love.

Shared Lives is a bit like fostering, but for adults with additional support needs. Carers open their homes to those that they care for, encouraging independence and helping them to be part of everyday family life. Carers can choose to care full time, part time or for periods of respite.

It's a rewarding role which makes a difference in the lives of both the carers and the adults they support.
