A new study could help detect bladder cancer more effectively and may allow some patients to avoid more invasive procedures called cystoscopies – a procedure involving a thin flexible tube with a camera inside being put into the patient’s urethra and moved through into the bladder.

The ARMADA (GALEAS) study, which is now live at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, is investigating whether patients can provide a urine sample at home and post the sample to a laboratory for analysis rather than undergoing a cystoscopy.

The study is being funded through a successful Innovation award from the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance and, if successful, could help detect bladder cancer more effectively according to Grigorios Kyriazis, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Mid Yorkshire NHS Teaching Trust.

“The opening of the study represents an important milestone in exploring how new diagnostic technologies could support more efficient, patient-centred cancer pathways across the region,” he said. “This is a really positive development for our service and means that eligible patients can access this research locally.”

Women experiencing menopause as a result of cancer treatment have the opportunity to come together, share experiences, access support and connect with others who understand the impact that cancer and menopause can have, thanks to community support sessions being delivered by the Menopause and Cancer Charity in Huddersfield.

Support for those experiencing menopausal symptoms following cancer treatment can vary across West Yorkshire and Harrogate, and opportunities such as these can provide valuable peer support, information and a sense of community.

Our Living With and Beyond Cancer Team is proud to promote its next Connecting Roles Community of Practice event.

Following on from the success of its previous Community of Practice on Physical Activity, this next session is titled Financial Support & Reablement – Supporting People with a Cancer Diagnosis.

This session is aimed at the non-clinical workforce across our region, exploring how we can better support people following a cancer diagnosis.

The team will share information on national and local financial support, and explore how people can be helped to maintain independence, build confidence and, where appropriate, remain in or return to work. 💼
