Did you know that West Yorkshire Police has a secure database of residents who support each other and share important updates and information around all aspects of crime prevention?

Traditional Neighbourhood Watches in West Yorkshire stands at 1,932 with a reach of 63,609 residents. We also have 243 private social media groups which reach over 173,000 residents.

We also link in with National Neighbourhood Watch. If you have not already registered your watch on that system, please do. By doing this, members of the public will then be able to send a request to join your watch, which in turn increases your numbers.

You can register your Neighbourhood Watch here: https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/

Neighbourhood Watch is a registered charity, which has been active now for approximately 45 years and supports like-minded residents in England and Wales with all aspects of crime prevention, training opportunities and safer communities. They have a fantastic range of information, ideas to increase your ‘watch’ and fundraising suggestions to help you.

For more information about how to join please see https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/ and search "Neighbourhood Watch" or email [email protected] quoting the area you live in.

Neighbourhood Watch Week! - THE HISTORY

This week is Neighbourhood Watch week, where each day we will be sharing a different post.

Today's post is about the history of Neighbourhood Watch and how it began.

In 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was stabbed in New York outside the apartment building across the street from where she lived. Two weeks after the murder it was rumoured that 37 witnesses saw or heard the attack, but none of them called the police or came to her aid.
This prompted inquiries into what became known as the bystander effect or "Genovese syndrome", and the murder became a staple of American psychology textbooks for the next four decades.
It also motivated a community response and the very first Neighbourhood Watch scheme was set up.
In 1982 the first scheme in the UK, known as Home Watch, was set up in Mollington, Cheshire. From there it grew from strength to strength.
The first West Yorkshire Scheme was set up in 1985 in Bradford by the Neighbourhood Sergeant and a small handful of residents.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR PHONE!

We are seeing a trend emerging in phone thefts across the country, where victims' phones are been targeted, not just for the purpose of re-selling the device, but to gain access to banking apps.

One such incident has seen one victim discover his bank accounts had been drained by about £21,000 - including a £7,000 loan taken out in his name (BBC News)

The below bullet points could save you from becoming targeted -

• Limit phone use in busy places. Keep your phone out of sight as much as possible. You're more at risk in busy places, particularly around tube or train stations.

• Observe your surroundings. If you must use your phone in public, use it in quiet areas, away from the edge of the road where thieves are likely to target you.

• Keep your phone physically secure. You can use phone cases with straps that attach to your wrist to help keep you connected to your phone. It's not 100% secure, but may act as a deterrent.

• DON'T store your passwords on your phone (i.e. In your notes app) – instead, use a password manager.

Please make sure that your devices are in a safe place when out and about to de-crease the chances of you becoming a victim.
