This Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to say a huge SYFR thank you to all our incredible volunteers.

Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting our Community Safety teams and helping to deliver important safety messages at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham.

In return, they gain valuable experience and skills, strengthening their confidence and supporting future employment opportunities.

SYFR Volunteer Coordinator, Sue Butler, said: "Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Their time, passion and commitment make a real difference in our communities every day, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they give."

Throughout the week, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our fantastic volunteers to give them the recognition they deserve. To all our volunteers, thank you 🫶

Another busy (and very warm! ☀️) week for both squads on the 76th firefighter Recruit Course.

Hallamshire Squad have been getting to grips with safe working at height, developing their rope skills and learning how to manoeuvre safely along scaffolding while operating in elevated environments. These essential skills help build confidence and competence when working in challenging conditions.

Rockingham Squad have been undertaking HazMat training, learning how to identify hazards, mitigate chemical exposure, and gather the vital information needed to understand and manage hazardous materials incidents safely. They also spent time with our Community Safety Team and visited the Lifewise Centre, gaining valuable insight into the prevention and education work carried out across South Yorkshire.

Looking ahead to next week, Hallamshire Squad will move on to Fire Tactics training, while Rockingham Squad will explore the wider range of rescue capabilities we provide, including water awareness and bariatric rescue training.

Keep up the great work, recruits! 👏🚒

Six fire crews are currently in attendance at a fire involving three coaches and nearby buildings on Aughton Road, Aughton, Rotherham.

If you live nearby keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area if possible.

If you see our crews this morning at Armthorpe Pit Top, don't be alarmed. They are taking part in a wildfire exercise.

Five years ago today, a young boy called Sam lost his life at Ulley Reservoir in South Yorkshire.

It feels especially poignant to share his story today, in light of the tragic events we have seen in lakes, rivers and the coast this week.

Treat water with respect.

Ey up South Yorkshire,

We know this warm weather’s grand, and it’s reyt good to see folk out and about enjoying it. While you’re making the most of it, please remember to respect and take care of our outdoor community spaces.

Over the past few days and weeks, we’ve seen an increase in incidents of deliberate fire setting, which has caused damage to facilities in local outdoor areas looked after by volunteers and community groups. These places mean a lot to local people, and there’s a lot of hard graft that goes into keeping them safe, tidy, and somewhere everyone can enjoy.

Anti-social behaviour like this doesn’t just spoil things, it has a real impact on communities and on the volunteers who put their time and effort into keeping these spaces in good nick.

So please, do your bit by respecting your local areas and look out for one another.

If you’ve got any information about deliberate fire setting or anti-social behaviour, you can report it anonymously through FireStoppers on 0800 169 5558.

A few photos from an incident our crews attended at Kilner Way Retail Park, Sheffield a few nights ago.

On one of the hottest May nights ever recorded, crews from Stocksbridge, Central, Rotherham, Lowedges, Elm Lane and Parkway attended a fire to the rear of a shop in Kilner Way after a call was received at 8.25pm on Monday 25 May.

The fire is believed to have been set deliberately in industrial bins which then spread to the building.

Firefighters left the scene at 11.39pm.
